About the RoleThe R&D Chemist will develop, test, and optimize specialty chemical formulations, with an emphasis on coatings, water treatment products, and related chemistries. This person will work closely with operations, quality, and commercial teams to move products from laboratory development through production scale-up.
The ideal candidate is curious, practical, detail-oriented, and comfortable working in both laboratory and manufacturing environments.
Key Responsibilities- Design, formulate, test, and optimize new and existing specialty chemical products.
- Plan and conduct laboratory experiments and product performance evaluations.
- Perform analytical testing on raw materials, in-process samples, and finished products.
- Accurately document formulations, test methods, observations, results, and technical conclusions.
- Analyze data and recommend improvements to product performance, quality, safety, and cost-effectiveness.
- Support the scale-up and transfer of formulations from the laboratory to full production.
- Partner with operations and quality teams to troubleshoot manufacturing and product-performance issues.
- Support customer-specific development projects and provide clear technical recommendations.
- Establish or improve laboratory procedures, specifications, and quality-control methods.
- Contribute to continuous-improvement projects across laboratory and plant operations.
- Maintain a safe, organized, and compliant laboratory environment.
- Stay current with relevant technologies, market developments, regulations, and industry standards.
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field.
- Hands-on experience developing, testing, or optimizing chemical formulations.
- Strong laboratory skills, including safe chemical handling, analytical testing, and accurate technical documentation.
- Ability to design experiments, interpret data, identify root causes, and solve complex technical problems.
- Understanding of quality-control practices for raw materials and finished products.
- Familiarity with industrial chemical manufacturing, formulation scale-up, and plant safety requirements.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with operations, quality, commercial, and customer-facing teams.
- Excellent organization, attention to detail, and commitment to safe work practices.
- Coatings formulation and performance testing.
- Specialty chemicals, water treatment, oil and gas, or pulp and paper applications.
- Supporting product scale-up or troubleshooting in a chemical manufacturing environment.
