Job Overview
The Patient Financial Counselor is responsible for providing patients with accurate estimates of charges for upcoming tests, procedures, and services. This position helps patients understand their insurance benefits, out-of-pocket costs, and available financial options to ensure a positive and informed patient experience.
Key Responsibilities:
Patient Estimates & Financial Communication
- Contact patients prior to scheduled services to provide cost estimates for testing, procedures, and office visits.
- Clearly explain insurance benefits, deductibles, co-pays, co-insurance, and out-of-pocket responsibilities.
- Answer patient questions regarding financial responsibility in a professional and compassionate manner.
- Review coverage and verify insurance eligibility when needed.
- Discuss available payment options, and payment plans.
Pre-Service and Registration Support
- Work closely with scheduling, registration, and billing teams to ensure accurate patient information.
- Review documentation to ensure correct coding and testing details for cost estimation.
- Notify staff of insurance issues, authorizations needed, or discrepancies found during benefit checks.
Documentation & Recordkeeping
- Document all patient interactions and estimate communications in the EHR or patient accounting system.
- Maintain accurate, up-to-date financial records and follow organizational policies.
Compliance & Customer Service
- Maintain HIPAA confidentiality and follow all billing and insurance guidelines.
- Deliver exceptional customer service to patients while maintaining professionalism and empathy.
Qualifications:
Education & Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Experience in healthcare billing, insurance verification, or patient access preferred.
- Knowledge of medical terminology and insurance processes is highly desirable.
Skills
- Strong communication and customer service skills.
- Ability to explain complex insurance and billing concepts in simple terms.
- Accurate data entry and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
- Proficiency with EHR, insurance portals, and financial systems.
