About the Role:

The Ophthalmic Assistant plays a critical role in supporting ophthalmologists and eye care professionals by providing comprehensive patient care and facilitating clinical operations. This position involves preparing patients for eye examinations, assisting with diagnostic tests, and managing patient records with precision and confidentiality. The Ophthalmic Assistant ensures that all clinical equipment is properly maintained and that patient flow is efficient, contributing to a positive patient experience. Additionally, the role requires responding promptly and effectively to ocular emergencies, demonstrating both clinical knowledge and calm under pressure. Ultimately, the Ophthalmic Assistant helps deliver high-quality eye care services by combining technical expertise with compassionate patient interaction.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; completion of an accredited ophthalmic assistant training program preferred.
  • Proficiency in medical terminology related to ophthalmology and general medicine.
  • Experience with electronic medical records (EMR) systems.
  • Strong communication skills for effective patient interaction and telephone handling.
  • Ability to respond appropriately to ocular emergencies and follow clinical protocols.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certification as an Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) or equivalent credential.
  • Previous experience working within an ophthalmology office.
  • Familiarity with advanced ophthalmic diagnostic equipment and procedures.
  • Additional training in patient care techniques and emergency response.
  • Knowledge of anatomy specific to ocular and general medical contexts.

Responsibilities:

  • Greet and prepare patients for ophthalmic examinations, including recording medical histories and vital signs.
  • Assist ophthalmologists during eye exams by performing preliminary tests such as visual acuity, intraocular pressure measurement, and visual field assessments.
  • Manage and update electronic medical records accurately, ensuring all patient information is current and compliant with healthcare regulations.
  • Operate and maintain ophthalmic instruments and diagnostic equipment, ensuring they are clean, calibrated, and ready for use.
  • Answer telephones, schedule appointments, and provide patients with instructions regarding procedures and follow-up care.
  • Respond to ocular emergencies by providing immediate assistance and coordinating with medical staff as necessary.

Skills:

The required skills such as medical terminology and patient care are essential for accurately understanding and communicating clinical information and providing compassionate support to patients. Proficiency in electronic medical records enables efficient documentation and retrieval of patient data, which is critical for continuity of care. Answering telephones and managing appointments require strong organizational and interpersonal skills to maintain smooth clinic operations. Knowledge of ocular emergencies and anatomy allows the assistant to recognize urgent conditions and assist appropriately, ensuring patient safety.
