Amant is a dynamic non-profit arts organization founded in 2019 that fosters artistic research, experimentation, and dialogue through exhibitions, live programs, publications, and artist residencies. Operating across two locations in Brooklyn, NY, and Chiusure, Siena, Italy, Amant advances the presentation of contemporary art with an emphasis on innovative formats and ideas. Our 21,000-square-foot Brooklyn campus features exhibition spaces, multipurpose screening and performance venues, a cafe, restaurant, and bookshop, all serving as a hub for interdisciplinary artistic exchange.
Position Overview
We’re seeking a strategic and creatively driven Junior Designer to work on an exciting range of design and publishing projects, including content creation and execution that will support our communication strategy across multiple channels. The ideal candidate is an innovative and collaborative designer and a sharp communicator with a deep understanding of contemporary culture and the visual arts. The Junior Designer brings strong visual design and typography skills, along with creative problem-solving and time management capabilities and a desire to learn and grow within an expanding and innovative contemporary arts organization.
This is an exciting opportunity to help evolve Amant’s visual design and content strategy across exhibitions, public programs, and communications while supporting its ambitious publishing program through innovative and contemporary design. The Junior Designer works as a liaison between all departments of the organization and reports to the Director of Design and Publishing.
Key Responsibilities:
Visual Identity and Brand Management
· Assist the Director of Design and Publishing to conceptualize, design, and produce all print and
digital materials in support of the organization’s design, communications, and publishing projects and initiatives.
· Maintain and evolve Amant's visual identity across all platforms and materials.
· Design, produce, and oversee the installation of exhibition graphics, signage, wayfinding, and environmental graphics for Amant's Brooklyn Campus.
· Work with the Director of Design and Publishing to maintain and update design standards and guidelines for internal and external use.
· File and preserve records of printed materials and Amant-related news and press.
Art Direction and Design
· Assist with design for all marketing materials, exhibition graphics, program announcements, and digital content.
· Works closely with the Director of Design and Publishing on the art direction of photography and videography projects for documentation and promotional purposes.
· Collaborate with external designers, photographers, and production vendors to create compelling content that aligns with Amant’s mission and communications strategy.
· Design and produce materials for special events, fundraising initiatives, and institutional partnerships.
Digital and Web Presence
· Assist with website design updates and user experience improvements.
· Source assets in collaboration with the curatorial team and coordinate with external producers and editor(s) and help ensure timely delivery of edited media (video and audio) for the Amant website and social media.
· Together with the Director of Design and Publishing and the curatorial team, develop a social media calendar and contribute with drafts/creative concepts for social media and online content.
· Ensure accessibility and mobile optimization across all digital platforms.
Publication Design
· Assist with the design and production of exhibition catalogues, books, digital publications, and other experimental text-based formats.
· In close dialogue with the Director of Design and Publishing and the curatorial team, help oversee the complete publication lifecycle from concept development through production.
· Help maintain production schedules in Notion and work cross-departmentally to ensure the timely completion of all design deliverables.
Outreach
· Maintain contact base in Artlogic and Mailchimp.
· Work closely with the curatorial and operations teams to develop creative for campaigns that support the organization’s marketing and communications goals.
· In collaboration with the Director of Design and Publishing, plan, develop and implement direct outreach campaigns for public programs and exhibitions, in coordination with the curatorial department.
· Work closely with the Director of Design and Publishing to steward the presentation of the Amant brand, including its café and restaurant, across all channels.
Requirements
· BFA or MFA in graphic design or related field and 1–3 years of professional work experience, preferably in contemporary art or a cultural institution.
· Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, and project management software such as Notion.
· Strong understanding of typography, grids, layout, color management, and print production.
· Experience working with animated typography and the ability to design and produce motion graphics is strongly recommended.
· Experience with digital video and interactive media, as well as captioning and transcription software, is strongly recommended.
· Familiarity with digital publishing platforms and emerging media formats.
· Working knowledge of UI/UX design is preferred.
· Understanding of print and digital accessibility standards and inclusive design practices.
· Exceptional problem-solving, time management, and organizational skills.
· Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
· Strong presentation skills and the ability to articulate ideas and design concepts clearly.
· Ability to balance multiple projects simultaneously, incorporate stakeholder feedback, complete projects on scheduled deadlines, and cultivate collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
· Flexible, responsive, and understands how to prioritize work and attend to tasks in a timely manner.
· Possess an understanding of online publishing, social media best practices, and online communication trends.
· Passionate about design and communication in the cultural sector and has a desire to grow in this field and further help grow Amant's voice and image through appealing concepts that reflect Amant's brand identity and mission.
