Amalgamated Sugar Company is seeking a Process Optimization Manager at our Twin Falls factory to assist Plant Management in optimizing processes to achieve the highest recovery at the lowest cost. This position is responsible for providing technical support and leading a team to optimize processes within the factory. The Process Optimization Manager will also provide leadership to the factory staff in the areas of safety, quality, environmental stewardship, and operational excellence. The Process Optimization Manager assists in developing, managing, and communicating the Company's Production Plan, Syrup Movement Plan, and Granulated Sugar Plan. This role monitors the factory production and operations in accordance with the Operating Instructions and company policies. The Process Optimization Manager will utilize their team of process engineers and control engineers to extract value at all levels, including identifying future projects for optimizing overall production. This position will report to the Plant Manager.

- Provide guidance and direction for engineering activities focused on continuous improvement.
- Work with the training department to have up-to-date training documents that focus on optimization techniques, tools, and guidelines.
- Manage, conduct, and/or update factory Process Hazard Assessments (PHAs).
- Provide process optimization oversight and leadership to Process Engineers to maximize throughput and extraction and to minimize operating expenses for all value streams.
- Provide technical process training support to factory and engineering personnel.
- Develop and manage continuous improvement (CI) projects in all areas of the factory.
- Work extensively with the Operating and Maintenance Departments in planning, developing, and engineering new improvement projects.
- Provide operational expertise and support to project engineers regarding new projects, including the development of PFDs, P&IDs, control narratives, etc. This also includes support for the installation and commissioning of the new projects.
- Help ensure that all value stream products meet applicable safety and quality parameters.
- Assist in ensuring that all chemical additions to the process are optimized, trialed for cost optimization, and bring new process aids to Plant Management for evaluation.
- Engage their team to develop and implement advanced control strategies and equipment for process optimization.
- Engage, champion, and share cross-factory technical learning and best practices for the company's advancement versus a single factory.
- Partner with peers at each factory to leverage process improvement sharing and skills development to advance process knowledge and depth across the enterprise.
- Manage assigned subordinate engineering staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs.
- Provide leadership, mentorship, and direction to subordinate engineering staff regarding professional development and career mapping.
- Maintain process area glide-paths and periodic KPI reports for distribution to factory and/or corporate team members.
- Maintain, develop, and be the owner of up-to-date process optimization models of the factory (e.g., Sugars, Pipeflow).
- Engage in project identification with heat and material balance supporting process optimization improvements.
- Develop strategies, procedures, and analysis for clean-in-place (CIP) chemical applications for all equipment in the facility.
- Evaluate cost advantage strategies for equipment cleaning and provide recommendations to Management.
- Work in close partnership with the reliability team and maintenance engineering teams to improve equipment uptime and overall improvement in plant reliability.
- Run specialized testing/analysis on unit operations to assess process efficiencies and identify areas of improvement opportunity – this may require laboratory skills and/or assets.
- Resolve issues with outside agencies (Fire, Police, News Media, Utilities, Idaho Department of Environmental Quality, Food and Drug Administration, and EPA) in the absence of management.
- Train, assign, prioritize, supervise, motivate, and evaluate the work of assigned employees.
- Support Maintenance and Repair teams as needed.
- Develop and deliver technical presentations at all levels of management and industry-related conferences as directed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering or related engineering field.
- 10-15 years’ experience in a progressing leadership role with emphasis on process optimization roles and control. Experience in a food industry-related field preferred.
- Petrochemical, Pulp and Paper, and chemical manufacturing fields are similar exposure industries.
- Demonstrated skills with process modeling programs and process data historian(s) expertise required.
- Or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
