Responsibilities
- Provide direct personal care to residents with memory impairments, including assistance with activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, grooming, and mobility support using equipment like Hoyer lifts and manual handling techniques.
- Monitor residents’ health status by observing vital signs, recognizing changes in condition, and reporting findings accurately using electronic health record (EHR) systems while maintaining HIPAA compliance.
- Implement individualized care plans tailored to each resident’s needs, including medication administration and specialized dementia or Alzheimer’s care strategies.
- Ensure a safe environment by practicing aseptic techniques during procedures such as catheter care and infection control protocols; assist with safe lifting practices and heavy lifting when necessary.
- Engage residents through meaningful activities that promote cognitive function and emotional well-being while fostering social interaction in accordance with their preferences.
- Document all care activities thoroughly in medical records or electronic health records (EHR), ensuring accuracy and compliance with healthcare regulations.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams—including nursing staff, therapists, and physicians—to deliver comprehensive patient service that supports overall health outcomes.
Skills
- Proven experience working with geriatric patients in long-term care facilities or assisted living environments; familiarity with dementia or Alzheimer’s care is highly valued.
- Strong understanding of medical terminology, physiology knowledge, and basic life support (BLS) certification to ensure safe patient handling and emergency response readiness.
- Excellent caregiving skills combined with compassionate communication tailored to individuals with developmental disabilities or behavioral health needs.
- Ability to perform heavy lifting safely using proper techniques; manual handling skills are essential for resident transfers and mobility assistance.
