About the Role:


Job Title: Substation Apprentice

Division: Substation

Field Positions: Fully in Field, Travel as required

Pay Type: Non-Exempt (Hourly)

Reports To: Foreman


Minimum Requirements

  • Background Check: Required
  • Drug Testing: Pre-employment Drug Screening
  • Driver’s license and MVR requirement: Valid Driver’s License with a clean MVR. Class ‘A’ CDL is preferred or you must obtain one within six months after you are hired.
  • Education: High School Diploma or GED or Equivalent
  • Qualifications/Certifications: Completed a certified Journeyman Lineman Apprenticeship Program
  • Must be CPR and First Aid certified or possess the ability to obtain certification within 90 days of employment
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States

Essential Skills, Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs all duties assigned by supervisor
  • Attend quarterly apprenticeship training in person
  • Attend monthly safety and apprenticeship Teams calls
  • Track your apprenticeship hours timely and accurately
  • Can read, understand and follow contract documents/drawings. Ensure all work is completed according to contract documents.
  • Responsible for producing quality work
  • Understand and comply with Company Policies and Operating Procedures.

Essential Safety Requirements

  • Adheres to and promotes Altitude’s safety culture.
  • Must arrive at your designated work area on time (early) and “Fit for Duty”. Physically, mentally, and emotionally ready to work.
  • Must fully participate in Altitude’s JHA process
  • Responsible for working safely and ensure good housekeeping in your work area
  • Identify, report, and mitigate hazards
  • Promotes and participates in Altitude’s ‘Monthly Safety Meetings’ via a Teams call
  • Adheres to all applicable Altitude, Local, State and Federal safety standards and safety requirements
  • Wears all required protective and safety equipment while performing tasks that require it

The Work-Substation

  • Assists in various routine construction tasks including installation of structural steel assembly, relay and control wirings, and general electrical construction.
  • Assists in routine mechanical and electrical maintenance and repair of power equipment such as circuit breakers, transformers, voltage regulators, reclosers, load tap changes, oil switches, and other equipment.
  • Assists in routine inspection of substation and distribution equipment and assist in all daily substation functions, switching and service restoration activities.
  • Assists in switching and service restoration activities.
  • Assists in various maintenance activities performed in the Substation Shop, including transformer maintenance, oil processing, and equipment testing.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to climb, bend over, kneel, squat, crawl and reach overhead.
  • Required to lift, push, pull, carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Able to use two handed tools.
  • Able to speak and hear information through oral communication.
  • Must have visual acuity to see items clearly and sharply.
  • Must be able to work in tight or confined spaces.

Other Requirements, Experience and Working Conditions

  • You will be required to provide your own basic hand tools
  • Working conditions could include inclement weather, rugged terrain and remote locations.
  • This job requires you to report to your job site on time as directed.
  • Excluding storm projects- work schedules/hours can be up to 12-hour days and up to 60-hours per week.
  • Willing to work nights, weekends, out of town, overtime, outages, and storm calls as required.
  • Must be willing to travel, work out of town for extended periods of time
  • You will be required to work near live power
