Job Summary: Assists the School Nurse in the smooth and efficient operation of the school health offices and services to improve the health status of students and promote a positive educational environment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Responsible for professional, medical treatment of students.
- Responsible for early detection of physical problems, as well as health evaluation.
- Responsible for disease education and prevention.
- Assists in promoting programs on health-education and immunization.
- Maintains up to date clinical records.
- Coordinates vision, and hearing testing.
- Provides emergency aid to students and school staff.
- Assists teachers in instructing students in health and nutrition education.
- Maintains supplies, equipment and assigned office.
- Serves as a health consultant and resource in health instruction curriculum.
- Prepares and submits required reports for Superintendent, County Health Department and State Board of Health.
- Visits students at home as necessary.
- Annually reviews and amends the health office policy and procedure manual, as needed.
- Functions as a contributing member of the educational team in health related aspects of the total school program.
- Attends staffing and child study team meetings as indicated.
- Plans and implements school nursing services in accordance with legally and professionally recognized standards of nursing practice and with in the limits of the policies of the school system.
- Assists faculty to identify and understand student health problems and helps faculty become aware of health resources available to students. Reports and interprets appropriate health data to faculty, staff, parents and students.
- Assists teachers with specific health units and health teaching as requested. Serves as a resource health person to faculty in the health curriculum area.

- Periodically inspects at the school site reporting problem areas to the principal. Reports, documents and records problems and accidents.
- Arranges for staff in-service programs as requested/or based on need.
- Assess students' response to medication. Alerts physicians as needed. Counsel, student, staff, and parents on proper dosage, for over the counter medications, side effect and contraindications. When indicated.
- Maintains health record system in a professionally and legally acceptable manner.
- When on site, assists in the orientation, supervision and evaluation of health aides and LPN's and directs and supervises health office volunteers and student helpers.
- Alerts school staff to the legal complications in specific areas of the school health program, such as, safety, animal bites, head injuries, medication, accident reports, etc.
- Initiates follow-up of problems discovered through screening program.
- Arranges parent conferences to discuss children with special health problems or needs and assists parents to utilize available community resources, makes home visits as indicated and goes to physician appointments at parent requests.
- Maintains health record system in a professionally and legally acceptable manner.
- Maintains health office supplies, record, daily register sheets and equipment according to guidelines.
- Manages budget for all health offices including requesting purchase orders, calibration of equipment as required and maintains the heath record computer programs, and its updates as required.
- Follows reporting procedures outlined by Pima County Health Department for communicable diseases.
- Assists with pre-registration and registration programs in the health area according to individual school procedures.
- Provides skilled professional nursing care to students with special needs as indicated.
- Responsible for evaluations of Health Clerks and office volunteers.
Qualifications:
Education & Experience:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- 1 year previous experience working with children
- Current CPR/AED/First Aid Certification
- Previous clerical or medical experience preferred
- Any equivalent combination of training, education and experience that meets minimum requirements
Working Conditions:
Works indoors office environment. Outdoors playground, exposure to all weather conditions and temperatures. Exposure to noise, dust and fumes. Extensive contact with students, parents, teachers and public.
