Altar City Church is a non-denominational, modern, Spirit-filled church plant in Lynchburg, Virginia. Founded by Pastor MJ Maldonado, Altar City began with just 10 people and has grown to over 150 attendees in under two years. We exist to cultivate a Christ-centered community marked by genuine discipleship, passionate worship, and an active pursuit of the Holy Spirit. As our church continues to grow, we are seeking an Associate Pastor who will partner with us in shepherding and equipping the body.
Position Overview The Associate Pastor will serve as a key leadership partner to the Lead Pastor, contributing to the spiritual health, strategic growth, and leadership development of Altar City Church. This role is designed as a leadership pipeline opportunity for someone called to pastoral ministry who desires hands-on experience in a growing, Spirit-filled church environment. The Associate Pastor will be actively involved in shepherding, teaching, and ministry systems while being mentored in leadership, vision, and church operations. This is a part-time role intended to grow in scope, responsibility, and compensation, with the clear hope of transitioning into a full-time pastoral role as the church continues to expand.
Time & Schedule Expectations Sunday morning services (weekly) Wednesday evening team meetings Meeting with congregants at least once per month for discipleship, pastoral care, or leadership development Availability for key church events and seasonal ministry rhythms as needed
Key Responsibilities Pastoral Care & Discipleship Provide one-on-one discipleship, spiritual guidance, and pastoral support to members.
Engage in counseling, prayer ministry, and visitation as needed.
Help foster a culture of relational discipleship and spiritual formation.
Teaching & Preaching Preach at least once per quarter during Sunday services.
Assist in planning sermon series, midweek teachings, and discipleship content.
Teach biblically sound messages aligned with the church’s vision and theology.
Small Groups & Curriculum Support Assist small group leaders with curriculum selection, training, and development.
Help create or coordinate biblically grounded group study materials.
Support the growth and health of the church’s small group ministry.
Ministry & Operational Support Support weekend services, events, outreach efforts, and volunteer development.
Collaborate with staff and ministry leaders to strengthen church systems and culture.
(Optional) Technical Support Basic understanding of sound, media, or production is a plus but not required.
Qualifications A mature, growing relationship with Jesus Christ.
Agreement with Altar City Church’s mission, culture, and Spirit-filled theology.
Strong biblical knowledge and the ability to preach/teach effectively.
Experience serving in a church ministry role or similar leadership context.
Heart for church planting, discipleship, and community-building.
Humble, teachable, and relational leadership style.
Compensation & Development This is a part-time stipend position intentionally structured as a leadership development and pastoral pipeline role.
Small monthly stipend
One paid lunch per month with a church member for discipleship, mentoring, or relational connection
Intentional personal and leadership development, including opportunities to attend conferences, trainings, and ministry events (with the church helping to cover or fully cover costs)
Increasing responsibility, influence, and compensation as the church grows, with the long-term goal of transitioning into a full-time pastoral role
