Alta Vista Academy is a small private school in Port Orchard serving approximately 10–15 students, Kindergarten through 12th grade. Our students come from diverse backgrounds and learning profiles, including those who experience significant behavioral and physical regulation challenges. We are committed to providing individualized, trauma-informed, and highly structured educational programming that empowers students to grow academically, socially, and emotionally.
Position Overview
We are seeking a compassionate, organized, and clinically strong Special Education Coordinator to lead and oversee individualized education programming for our student population. This role requires strong leadership, collaboration, and behavioral support skills. The ideal candidate is confident in IEP development, data-driven instruction, and supporting staff in high-needs environments.
Key Responsibilities
IEP & Compliance
- Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Education Programs (IEPs)
- Conduct and document IEP progress monitoring
- Track goals, accommodations, and service implementation
- Maintain compliance with state and district requirements
Curriculum & Instruction
- Oversee curriculum implementation across grade levels (K–12)
- Monitor academic progress and adjust programming as needed
- Integrate guidance from SLPs, OTs, and BCBAs into daily lesson planning and instructional strategies
- Support differentiated and individualized instruction
Behavior & Student Support
- Assist in the development and implementation of Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs)
- Provide verbal and physical de-escalation as needed
- Model and teach appropriate behavioral strategies to staff
- CPI training and certification provided (or maintained if already certified)
Team Leadership
- Support, teach, and guide para-educators in implementing daily lesson plans
- Provide coaching and feedback to instructional staff
- Collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary team
- Participate in case reviews and team problem-solving
Family & District Collaboration
- Maintain effective, professional communication with parents and guardians
- Coordinate and collaborate with school districts
- Lead and participate in IEP meetings
- Provide updates and maintain consistent documentation
Program Development & School Community
- Assist with event planning and school participation activities
- Coordinate field trips and community-based learning experiences
- Support overall program structure and growth
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Special Education or related field
- Valid Washington State Special Education teaching certification (or ability to obtain)
- Experience working with students exhibiting intense physical or behavioral challenges preferred
- Strong knowledge of IEP development and compliance
- Experience collaborating with related service providers (SLP, OT, BCBA)
- Ability to remain calm, structured, and solution-focused in high-energy environments
- Strong leadership and organizational skills
