What are the responsibilities and job description for the CNC programmer and operator position at Alpine Overhead Doors, Inc.?
Company Overview
Alpine Overhead Doors, Inc. is an internationally recognized door manufacturer renowned for its innovation and commitment to quality since 1972. As an ISO9001:2008 registered company, we have established ourselves as a leading brand in the overhead door industry, continuously advancing manufacturing excellence.
Overview
We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented CNC Machinist & Programmer to join our manufacturing operations. In this dual-function role, you will be responsible for creating, editing, and optimizing CNC programs, as well as setting up and operating multi-axis CNC machinery (mills, lathes, roll-forming, or structural steel equipment).
The ideal candidate possesses strong precision machining capabilities, a deep understanding of G-code/M-code programming, and the ability to interpret complex technical drawings. You will play a vital role in ensuring quality standards, maintaining continuous production schedules, and implementing Lean 5S practices on the shop floor.
Key Responsibilities
Programming & Setup
- Develop and write CNC programs using CAD (Computer-Aided Design) and CAM (Computer-Aided Manufacturing) software, ensuring optimal machining processes for CNC milling machines, lathes, and multi-axis CNC machines
- Write, edit, and optimize G-code and M-code programs for multi-axis CNC machines using CAM software (e.g., Mastercam, Fusion 360) or manual controller entry.
- Perform complete machine setups, including mounting fixtures, setting tool offsets, loading raw materials, and establishing work coordination systems.
- Calculate cutting parameters such as speeds, feeds, tool paths, and depth of cut based on material specifications (e.g., structural steel, aluminum, stainless steel, galvanized sheet metal).
- Prove out new programs safely by running first-article inspections and adjusting parameters to prevent tool crashes or material waste.
Operations & Machining
- Operate assigned CNC machines to fabricate precision parts and components according to engineering blueprints and job orders.
- Perform in-process quality inspections using precision measuring instruments (micrometers, calipers, height gauges, dial indicators, and thread gauges).
- Monitor machine performance, cutting tools, and coolant levels during operations, diagnosing and rectifying equipment issues or dimensional deviations promptly.
- Maintain strict dimensional tolerances and surface finish requirements specified in technical drawings.
- Maintain documentation of machine setups, tool changes, program adjustments, and production logs
- Troubleshoot machining issues along with geometry, tooling wear, or programming errors to minimize downtime
Continuous Improvement & Safety
- Collaborate with engineering and production personnel to optimize machining processes, cycle times, and tool life.
- Maintain shop floor cleanliness, organization, and tool management adhering to 5S principles.
- Execute routine daily preventive maintenance (TPM) on equipment and report mechanical or electrical issues to maintenance personnel immediately.
- Strictly adhere to all safety regulations, OSHA guidelines, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements, and lock-out/tag-out (LOTO) protocols.
Qualifications & SkillsRequired
- Experience: Minimum of 3–5 years of experience in CNC setup, operation, and programming within a custom or heavy manufacturing environment.
- Programming Proficiency: Demonstrated experience writing and troubleshooting G-code/M-code; proficiency in CAM/CAD software systems.
- Blueprint Reading: Strong ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings, welding symbols, and Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T).
- Technical Math: Practical knowledge of shop mathematics, geometry, and trigonometry for layout and machining calculations.
- Measurement Skills: High proficiency with precision measurement tools and gauges.
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, and reach for extended periods during shift operations.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs safely.
- Exposure to typical manufacturing facility environments, including industrial noise, lubricants, metal shavings, and heavy machinery operations.
