Position Objective:
Working under general supervision, the Dental Assistant 1 will support the residents and faculty in the Periodontal Department in the School of Dental Medicine. Primary duties will include surgical assistance and management of supplies and equipment.
Essential Functions:
1. Provide properly sterilized instruments and equipment for residents. (25%)
2. Provide chair-side assistance for the faculty, residents and hygienists (only when residents are in class). (15%)
3. Dispense supplies, instruments and equipment to residents for efficient and timely patient treatment. (15%)
4. Monitor usage of dental and office supplies. Prepare pre-requisitions to reorder materials and supplies. Obtain proper authorization. (6%)
5. Prepare the clinic for the day schedule. Assist with cleaning cubicles. Stock supplies in clinic/cubicles. Refresh sterile water daily to each cubicle unit. (10%)
Nonessential Functions:
1. Verify proof of patient payment for all procedures and specialty items such as implants, bone grafts, etc. (5%)
2. Track and follow up on insurance pretreatment estimates. (5%)
3. Check equipment to ensure that it is in good working order. Contact appropriate service vendors or dental school staff for repairs. (5%)
4. Check completion of all forms after entries and report deficiencies to attending faculty and residents. (5%)
5. Help manage the daily clinic schedule to maintain timely and efficient patient flow. (2%)
6. Take dental radiographs. (2%)
7. Track and record all medical, laboratory and pathology reports and relevant forms in the patient record. (2%)
8. Maintain MSDS sheets for department material. (1%)
9. Maintain emergency equipment and assist with resuscitation procedures. (1%)
10. Inform residents during orientation session on clinic procedures, including maintenance of sterility. (1%)
11. Perform other duties as assigned. (<1%)
Contacts:
Department: Continuous contact with cashiers, dispensary staff, receptionists, insurance personnel, all graduate department specialty clinics and clinical instructors on a daily basis to obtain and provide information and resolve problems. Contact with the department chair and clinic director on a daily basis to obtain and provide information and resolve problems.
University: Infrequent to no contacts.
External: Continuous contact with patients to assist and advise.
Students: Continuous contact with graduate and post graduate residents to assist and advise.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
No staff supervisory responsibility.
Qualifications:
Experience: 3 or more months of dental assisting experience is required.
Education/Licensing: High school education required. Certified Dental Assistant. Current State of Ohio radiology certification. Annual CPR certification.
Required Skills:
1. Basic knowledge of computer software.
2. Basic knowledge of insurance codes and forms.
3. Must be familiar with Microsoft Office Word and Excel.
4. Technical knowledge of dental assisting and sterilization.
5. Demonstrated history of successful support, education, and advocacy for all students, aligned with the values, mission, and messaging of the university, while adhering to the staff policy on conflict of commitment and interest.
6. Ability to meet consistent attendance.
7. Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors and customers face to face.
