JOB DESCRIPTION

Position: Alphabet Soup Thrift Store Lead (Clothing Store location)

This is a full-time, non-exempt position. This position is responsible for all aspects of the Alphabet Soup retail operation and donations processing areas. This position also fills in as needed in the absence of the Store Manager. This position helps achieve the mission of Alphabet Soup Thrift by providing exceptional service to customers on the sales floor and supporting volunteers with accurately processing sales through the point-of-sale system. Alphabet Soup is a volunteer-run store. This position will work with a team of staff and volunteers to create a welcoming thrift opportunity for our community. Store Leads will fill in as required in the absence of the Store Manager and are responsible for all aspects of the daily retail operations of the store.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the direction of the Store Manager.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Demonstrates ability to create positive relations with customers, welcomes customers, and helps answer questions about merchandise and our pricing model.
  • Provide excellent customer service.
  • Accurate accounting for daily receipts, change bags, and deposits.
  • Demonstrate effective supervision skills working with volunteers and staff, including support, training, delegation, problem-solving, organization, decision-making, and coordination. Works as a team member with staff, volunteers, and the PEF committee.
  • Maintains an organized, safe, well-stocked, and clean sales floor.
  • Ability to oversee store and window display.
  • Ability to communicate and work with PEF, store staff, and PEF committee to create store changes that may be suggested or discussed.
  • Ability to access and create effective merchandising practices and pricing items consistent with their value.
  • See that merchandise is arranged by color and like items.
  • Assume Store Manager duties when absent.
  • Participate in establishing daily, weekly, and or monthly sales promotions.
  • Oversee and manage the Donation Processors and maintain a clean, well-organized donation drop-off, storage, and processing area.
  • Assist with the development and monitoring of the annual store budget.
  • Ability to purge and dispose of unwanted items, preferably at other distribution points.
  • Participate in staff and PEF meetings as requested.
  • Assist in filling open shifts on the volunteer schedule.
  • Ability to enforce PEF’s HR policies, procedures, and safe practices for staff and volunteers.
  • Understand and promote PEF’s mission to customers and volunteers.
  • Manage the social media of the Home or Clothing Store (Facebook and Instagram)
  • Other duties, as assigned.

MINIMUM POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have valid CDL in good standing.
  • Past retail or customer service experience is a plus.
  • Friendly, helpful, customer-centered attitude.
  • Ability to ring items in a computer-based point-of-sale system and count change.
  • Attention to detail and ability to follow opening and closing procedures to reconcile P.O. S.
  • Ability to work effectively in a cross-cultural environment with a team made of staff and volunteers.
  • Intermediate proficiency in English (oral, written, and interpersonal communication) is required.
  • Willingness to cross-train on other functions of the store team is a plus.
  • Must be willing to work a flexible schedule that includes weekends.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing this job's duties, the employees are regularly required to sit, stand, walk, reach, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Frequent lifting and moving light to heavy boxes, bags, and furniture is required. Employees must exercise good judgment when performing these tasks and determining when to get assistance.

PROFESSIONAL CODE OF CONDUCT
This position is expected to maintain a professional demeanor and conduct when interacting with store volunteers and staff, customers, PEF Board Members, PEF staff, and the Petaluma community.

COMPENSATION:
This is a full-time (40 hours per week) position. Hourly wage is $19.00 - $23.00 per hour based on experience. Ten days Sick/vacation days. Voluntary Simple IRA Employer Match program is available after the completion of one year and four months. PEF does not currently offer medical coverage.

AT-WILL EMPLOYMENT
Petaluma Educational Foundation (PEF) is an at-will employer. Under the at-will policy, neither the store lead and PEF are not committed to continuing the employment relationship for any specific term. Either side may terminate the relationship at any time, with or without cause and with or without notice. PEF retains the right to demote, transfer, change job duties, and compensation at any time with or without notice and with or without cause in its sole discretion. In deciding to work for the Petaluma Educational Foundation, or continuing to work for the Petaluma Educational Foundation, you must understand and accept these terms of employment.
