The Estimator plays a key role in the preconstruction process by reviewing project documents, determining material and labor requirements, and developing detailed cost proposals. This individual collaborates closely with project managers, clients, and internal teams to ensure all estimates are complete, accurate, and aligned with project goals. This is a critical position for ensuring profitability, competitiveness, and long-term client relationships.
Responsibilities
- Review project plans, specifications, addendums, and related documents to fully understand scope and insulation requirements.
- Prepare detailed and accurate cost estimates, including materials, labor, equipment, subcontractors, and all associated project costs.
- Perform quantity takeoffs for piping, ductwork, equipment, mechanical rooms, and associated systems.
- Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and clients to clarify scope details and confirm project expectations.
- Develop comprehensive bid proposals, ensuring clarity in scope, assumptions, and pricing.
- Participate in bid reviews, strategy meetings, and negotiations as needed.
- Maintain and update historical cost data, vendor pricing, and production rate databases.
- Coordinate with suppliers and subcontractors to obtain accurate and competitive pricing.
- Assist the project team during project handoffs by reviewing estimate details, assumptions, and material requirements.
- 10 years of experience in commercial or industrial mechanical insulation OR 5 years of experience with a Bachelor’s degree in construction management, engineering, or a related field (preferred).
- Minimum of 1 year of proven estimating experience in construction, insulation, mechanical systems, or similar trade.
- Strong understanding of mechanical insulation for piping, ductwork, mechanical equipment, heat tracing, and firestopping.
- Proficiency with estimating software (MIKE – Mechanical Insulation Key Estimator Software preferred).
- Strong command of Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook).
- Exceptional analytical, mathematical, and organizational skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate with project teams, vendors, and clients.
- Ability to interpret construction drawings, specifications, and technical details with a high degree of accuracy.
