Medical Advocate/Direct Support Professional

This position will work Tuesday through Friday general business hours and every other Sat/Sun 6am to 2pm.

Position Summary

The Medical Advocate provides support duties related to medical processes and records, may assist with internal testing and screening, order and stock medical supplies, and takes people supported to medical appointment. As scheduled, provides care to people supported and assists them in leading self-directed lives.  The key responsibilities listed below are representative and not all inclusive. This position is responsible to: people supported, Agency Nurse.

 

Key Responsibilities

Incorporate our values and mission into delivery of all services.

Communicate regularly with the Agency Nurse/ Clinical Services Director and others as needed or required. Present any problems or issues without delay.

Knowledge of administrative practices and procedures as well as applicable regulations, guidelines, and policy pertaining to position and services provided; maintain documentation and submit paperwork in a timely manner; protect and preserve operations by following HIPAA guidelines.

 

General Duties

Assist people supported with schedule and attending medical appointments and labs; distribute appointment calendar to all appropriate people supported and staff; Tlog on all appointments and schedule follow-up appointment if needed; arrange transportation for all appointments which may be in town or out of town, check out an Alpha Opportunities, Inc. (AOI) vehicle and fill gas as needed; provide other general runner duties and tasks as assigned; order medical and general supplies for group homes; check stock medications and order when needed.

 

Medical Support Records

Scan and file documents; file appropriate document in people supported charts; purge medical files that are older than seven (7) years; check people supported vaccination records and keep up to date records notifying parents or guardians; notify program coordinators about premeds so Human Rights Committee (HRC) can approve and follow-up before appointments to ensure authorization was approved; drop off and pick up information from clinics such as new MARs (Medical Administration Record), medical information, and other records or documents as needed; order pre-medications.

 

Direct Care Services

Provide direct care services when assigned to people supported, this includes help with daily living skills and daily care; assist with medications and treatments; complete all necessary documentation; take people supported to appointments and to get supplies; run office errands as needed.

 

Qualifications:

Knowledge, Skills, and Qualification

Education and Experience:

High school diploma, GED, or suitable equivalent; college or an associate degree in a related field is desirable or in absence of degree, equivalent experience in Developmental Disabilities; 1 year of experience in a similar facility and/or DD certified is preferred.

  • Valid driver’s license and auto liability insurance
  • Serve on internal committees as required

 

Physical Requirements:

 

Strength: Sufficient to assist with lifting and transferring a person(s) and perform CPR. Ability to lift twenty (20) lbs. Moving, lifting or transferring of person(s) may involve lifting of up to fifty (50) lbs., as well as assist with weights of more than one hundred (100) lbs.

Mobility: Sufficient mobility to bend, stoop and bend down to the floor, ability to move around rapidly and in small, confined areas.
