Job Overview:
The Laboratory Manager plays a vital role for Alpha Medical Laboratory (Alpha) meeting CLIA
and COLA requirements for Alpha laboratories. The position is for providing oversight of Alpha
labs, producing the documentation required by CLIA and/or COLA to keep Alpha’s Laboratory
compliant, and managing and assisting to run lab instruments for daily lab production.
Responsibilities and Duties:
Compliance management for Alpha laboratories of CLIA and COLA laboratory
requirements. At minimum this includes producing the following reports: Monthly QC,
Weekly and Monthly Maintenance of lab instruments, API proficiency testing on
instruments, Calibration reporting (linearity), write correction action plans as needed,
document lab technician competency, etc. Responsibilities include participation in CLIA
or COLA lab inspections as Alpha’s Representative.
Lead the laboratory operations of an Alpha laboratory, running laboratory instruments
as needed, and assisting as needed to produce all the labs submitted daily to the lab.
Minimizing lab processing turnaround time with a focus on same day turnaround for
applicable tests.
For new laboratory tests, create and produce Validation Studies that allow testing of
patient samples in Alpha’s laboratories. Utilize EP Evaluator software functionality and
its reports in these studies.
Create new and review existing Alpha lab protocols to ensure lab regulatory compliance.
Provide documentation and training when necessary to lab techs for the correct use of
lab equipment. Stay abreast of changes to the industry which would require changes to
the lab protocols. Keep records of lab technicians, documenting their training in the
correct use of the lab equipment.
Make recommendations and assist in enforcing policies that reduce or control the costs
of lab operations. Utilize historic lab and phlebotomy data to determine lab operational
hours, lab inventory controls, staffing levels at labs, development of lab budgets, etc.
Communicate with the Lab’s assigned Lab Director for the lab for resolution to Lab
Director issues. Prepare documents for lab director to sign off on CLIA/COLA monthly
required documents.
Oversee laboratory safety and ensure that the laboratory remains in compliance with all
local, state, and federal regulations. In cases where non-compliance is found,
documents the instances as well as how they were abated.
Define work schedule for laboratory staff, ensure instruments are operating properly,
adequate level of consumables is maintained, manage lab personnel, and ensure labs
are released for clients in a timely manner.

Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in chemical, physical, or biological science
NOTE: Must also have a license if required by the state
