Alpena Public Schools is currently accepting applications for Bus Drivers. Hours and routes vary dependent upon APS Transportation Center needs. The normal work schedule is Monday through Friday. Additional "labor pool" hours are available for those interested. Labor pool hours can be combined with driver hours to qualify for full-time benefits. Relief drivers have the potential to bid into regular routes based on seniority.

QUALIFICATIONS:
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) is required. Selected candidates will be required to obtain a Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with "P" and "S" endorsements. This position also requires a Criminal History check, Drivers License check, a DOT physical & drug screen. Paid training and licensing assistance will be provided.

All candidates must attend a mandatory orientation meeting prior to beginning the driver training.

Position Title: Bus Driver
Department: Operations
Reports To: Supervisor of Transportation
Location: Transportation Unit/Group: ESPI FTE: Varies Job Classification: Hourly

SUMMARY: Drives bus to transport students over specified routes according to time schedule. Complies with all traffic regulations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Drives a school bus safely and professionally.
  • Performs and properly completes daily pre and post-trip inspections.
  • Cleans bus on a regular basis.
  • Complies with all traffic ordinances.
  • Complies with discipline policies as established for student transportation.
  • Acts in a patient, kind and personable manner to students, parents and the general public.
  • Deals with stressful situations in a professional manner.
  • Participates in on-site training.
  • Shows proficiency in handling and maneuvering a school bus.
  • Maintains regular and reliable attendance.
  • Follows all Board policies and District procedures.
  • Reviews email communication regularly and responds as needed.
  • Communicates effectively over a CB radio.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supervises students while transporting them to and from school and various activities.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) is required. Must be able to pass the Department of Transportation (DOT) physical examination, including the drug test, and MDE Basic Training Program.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Must be able to obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class B with School Bus, Passenger and Air Brake endorsements. Must pass State Skill Tests and State Written Tests.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read a limited number of two and three syllable words and to recognize similarities and
differences between words and between series of numbers. Ability to print and speak simple sentences.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume and distance.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to apply common-sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:
Ability to work in a friendly manner with coworkers. Ability to read and understand maps. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both in oral and written form. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all District requirements and Board of Education policies. Ability to pass a random drug and alcohol test per CDL state requirements.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is continuously required to sit and occasionally required to walk or stand. The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk while performing the duties of this job. The employee frequently repeats the same hand, arm or finger motion many times. The employee frequently uses hand strength to grasp tools. The employee continuously drives on the job. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds such as students. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception and peripheral vision. The employee will be required to go up and down a few steps throughout the day. The employee must be able to exit the back of a bus through an emergency exit door when necessary.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in temperatures above 100 degrees and below 32 degrees and occasionally will walk on slippery surfaces. The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints. The employee has direct responsibility for the safety and well-being of others. The noise level in the work environment is frequently loud to where you have to raise your voice to be heard.

The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescription controlled substance use and/or abuse in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the District.

Any employee receiving a positive test for drugs and/or alcohol or any controlled substance, as defined by D.O.T. regulations while on the job will be terminated.
