Position Objective
The Manager of the Sterile Processing Department (SPD) is responsible for the successful management and operation of SPD. The Manager of the SPD is responsible for directing and supervising the operations of the SPD. In addition to possessing clinical knowledge, this position needs to have strong administrative skills in order to plan, direct and coordinate the decontamination, sterilization, and distribution of instrumentation to all of the units of the hospital and associated clinics. The Manager of SPD must work closely with the managers of PACU, ASU, and OR in an effort to support a unified team within the Surgical Services Department. This position must coordinate with the Director of Surgical Services to provide cohesiveness within the Surgical Services Department.

Essential Responsibilities
- Understanding of all hospital policies and procedures regarding cleaning, sterilization and distribution of trays to all the units of the hospital
- Develops proper Sterile Processing procedures that ensure patient safety and quality care of instruments.
- Work cooperatively and supportively with members of the medical staff to provide services.
- Provide significant input into the preparation of a departmental budget
- Provides support and direction to unit staff by guiding, coaching, developing and counseling when necessary
- Responsible for maintaining staffing compliance within regulatory requirements and budget consideration.
- Researches and prepares cost reduction proposals and implements them as applicable.
- Evaluates ongoing processes and reports significant problems to appropriate team members.
- Collaborates with Human Resources to ensure personnel policy development and communication to staff to achieve consistency in labor and employee relations.
- Serves as resource and role model for staff.
- Plans, evaluates, recommends and implements new initiatives when appropriate.
- Monitors, coaches, develop and evaluate performance of staff on an ongoing basis in accordance with applicable performance standards.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with vendors, employees, managers, and physicians.
- Demonstrates knowledge and application of established practices, protocols, and procedures of the position, department, and applicable professional standards.
- Maintains competency and knowledge of current standards of practice, trends, and developments in related scope of job role or practice; commits to continuous learning for themselves.
- Develops and fosters continuous learning for members of his/her team.

- Supervises and coordinates activities of Sterile Processing staff to maintain patient safety and quality care of instruments.
- Responsible for evaluating employee performance and counseling employees regarding their performance:
- May institute corrective action when necessary
- May discipline, for just cause, employees under your supervision
- May suspend, for just cause, employees under your supervision
- May reward employees under your supervision, i.e. letter of commendation training opportunities, etc.
- Responsible for adjusting grievances of employees
- High school graduate or equivalent
- Certified Registered Central Supply Technician/or Certified Surgical Technologist
- Previous Sterile Processing experience.
- Prior management experience
