The Director of Bands is responsible for leading and managing a comprehensive 7-12 school instrumental music program that promotes musical excellence, student leadership, and school/community engagement. The position includes teaching band classes, directing performances, and overseeing all aspects of the band program.
MINIMAL QUALIFICATIONS:
- Holds a valid Arkansas Teaching License in K-12 Music Education
- 7-12 grade band directing experience
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience as a high school band program director
- Experience with marching band, jazz band, or competitive ensembles
- Strong conducting, organizational, and leadership skills
ESSENTIAL DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES, EXPERIENCE AND SKILL SET
- Plan and deliver a comprehensive instrumental music program aligned with standards from the Arkansas Division of Elementary and Secondary Education.
- Teach music theory, instrumental techniques, and ensemble performance skills.
- Develop a balanced band program including concert band, marching band, and other ensembles.
- Manage inventory, maintenance, and proper use of instruments, uniforms, and equipment.
- Coordinate schedules for rehearsals, performances, and travel.
- Oversee budgeting and fundraising activities with administrative approval.
- Communicate regularly with students, parents, administrators, and community.
- Collaborate with faculty and fine arts staff to support school programs.
- Participate in faculty meetings, professional development, and school committees.
- Ensure a safe learning environment during rehearsals, travel, and performances.
- Supervise students during on-campus and off-campus events.
- Lead daily rehearsals and sectionals to improve individual and group performance.
- Select appropriate music literature for performance and skill development.
- Prepare students for regional and state honor bands, solo/ensemble events, and festivals.
- Organize and conduct concerts, competitions, parades, and school events.
- Foster teamwork, discipline, leadership, and responsibility among students.
- Support student leadership groups (e.g., drum majors, section leaders).
- Promote pride and school spirit through band participation.
