Alloy Engineering, a 100% employee-owned custom metal fabrication manufacturer in Berea, Ohio, is seeking a detail-oriented CAD Designer to support engineered products for high-temperature and corrosive industrial applications. This role uses SolidWorks and 3D CAD software to develop accurate models, fabrication drawings, assembly drawings, layouts, sketches, and technical documentation from customer specifications, engineering concepts, and existing designs. The CAD Designer partners with engineering, sales, production, quality, and vendors to create manufacturable solutions, maintain drawing accuracy, and support projects from concept through fabrication.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create and revise 3D part models, assemblies, and detailed 2D production drawings in SolidWorks.
  • Convert customer drawings, specifications, sketches, and rough concepts into complete, manufacturable designs.
  • Prepare shop fabrication drawings, assembly drawings, layouts, details, sections, and bills of materials to support production.
  • Apply appropriate dimensions, tolerances, weld symbols, notes, and material specifications to engineering drawings.
  • Review designs for accuracy, fit, function, manufacturability, and compliance with customer requirements and applicable AWS or ASME standards.
  • Collaborate with engineers to develop and refine design concepts for custom fabricated alloy equipment and components.
  • Work closely with production, welding, machining, forming, quality, sales, and vendors to resolve drawing questions and support efficient manufacturing.
  • Create Alloy Engineering drawings from original concepts or customer-supplied models, drawings, and technical information.
  • Maintain accurate part numbers, drawing files, models, and revision histories in Alloy Engineering’s document vault or product data management system.
  • Process drawing updates and engineering changes while maintaining document and revision control.
  • Participate in internal and customer design reviews, incorporate feedback, and clearly communicate technical information.
  • Support continuous improvement by identifying opportunities to standardize drawings, improve design practices, and reduce fabrication errors or rework.
  • Manage multiple projects and priorities while meeting quality and schedule expectations.

Requirements

  • Proficiency with SolidWorks or comparable 3D mechanical CAD software.
  • Ability to create and interpret 2D engineering drawings, 3D models, assembly drawings, and technical specifications.
  • Working knowledge of mechanical drafting practices, including GD&T, weld symbols, dimensioning, tolerancing, and fabrication drawings.
  • Understanding of manufacturing processes, including welding, sheet metal fabrication, machining, cutting, forming, and assembly.
  • Strong spatial reasoning with the ability to translate concepts into accurate, practical designs.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify design conflicts and recommend solutions.
  • High attention to detail with strong organizational and revision-control skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and communicate effectively with engineering, production, customers, and vendors.
  • Willingness to learn, accept feedback, and grow within an employee-owned manufacturing organization.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in CAD, drafting, mechanical design, mechanical engineering, or a related field. Equivalent hands-on experience will be considered.
  • SolidWorks or CAD certification, or formal mechanical drafting training.
  • Experience creating fabrication drawings for custom equipment, pressure vessels, heat exchangers, industrial components, or welded assemblies.
  • Experience in custom metal fabrication using steel, stainless steel, or high-temperature alloys.
  • Familiarity with ASME and AWS standards, bills of materials, and engineering change processes.
