Roles and Responsibilities

• Decontaminate, clean, inspect, assemble, sterilize, and distribute surgical instruments and medical equipment
• Prepare surgical instrument trays, case carts, and supplies according to scheduled procedures
• Operate sterilizers, washers, ultrasonic cleaners, and other sterile processing equipment according to manufacturer and facility guidelines
• Inspect surgical instruments for cleanliness, functionality, damage, and proper operation
• Assemble instrument sets accurately according to established count sheets and procedure requirements
• Perform biological, chemical, and mechanical monitoring of sterilization processes
• Ensure sterilized instruments and supplies are properly packaged, labeled, stored, and distributed
• Deliver instruments and sterile supplies to operating rooms and procedural areas as needed
• Assist with operating room turnover and urgent instrument requests
• Identify damaged, missing, or malfunctioning instruments and coordinate repair or replacement
• Maintain accurate records for sterilization cycles, instrument tracking, and quality-control activities
• Maintain inventory of sterile supplies and communicate shortages or supply concerns
• Follow infection prevention, AAMI, OSHA, HIPAA, and facility-specific safety standards
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe sterile processing environment
• Participate in quality assurance and process improvement initiatives
• Work closely with surgical technologists, RNs, physicians, and other perioperative professionals

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required
• Minimum 2 years of recent Sterile Processing Technician experience
• Completion of an accredited Sterile Processing program preferred
• CRCST or CSPDT certification required by facility
• Current BLS certification preferred or required by facility
• Strong knowledge of surgical instruments, decontamination, sterilization, and infection prevention
• Familiarity with instrument tracking systems
• Knowledge of sterilization methods, including steam and low-temperature sterilization
• Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
• Strong communication and teamwork abilities
• Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced healthcare environment
• Ability to safely handle instrument trays and equipment
• Commitment to patient safety and quality standards
