Position Summary

Allied Recycling Center is a metal recycling company in Walpole, Massachusetts, with approximately 60 employees and a company-operated fleet of roll-off and trailer equipment.

This is a newly created, standalone position responsible for Allied's safety and health program: writing the procedures, training employees, inspecting the site, and correcting hazards. The position reports to the General Manager, works closely with the Fleet Manager and yard supervisors, and has the authority to stop unsafe work.

Responsibilities

Inspections and hazard control

  • Conduct and document routine facility, yard, and equipment safety inspections
  • Track corrective actions to closure and escalate items that are not resolved
  • Identify hazards around mobile equipment traffic, material handlers, balers, shears, torch cutting, and pedestrian and customer areas

Training and onboarding

  • Conduct safety orientation for all new hires, covering site-specific hazards and PPE
  • Maintain the recurring training calendar and all training records
  • Train and evaluate operators of powered industrial trucks and other mobile equipment
  • Lead regular safety meetings and toolbox talks for yard, shop, and driver groups

Programs and documentation

  • Write, review, and update written safety programs and SOPs as operations and regulations change — including hazard communication, lockout/tagout, PPE hazard assessments, hearing conservation, respiratory protection, hot work, fire prevention, emergency action plan, confined space, and fall protection
  • Maintain OSHA 300 and 300A recordkeeping and post as required
  • Manage safety data sheets and chemical inventory

Incidents and claims

  • Investigate injuries, near-misses, property damage, and fires; determine root cause and implement corrective action
  • Coordinate injury reporting and return-to-work with the workers' compensation carrier and occupational health provider
  • Serve as point of contact for OSHA, insurance loss-control visits, and third-party audits

Fleet and DOT support

  • Work with the Fleet Manager on driver safety, roadside inspection and CSA trend review, post-accident procedures, and DOT-required supervisor training
  • Support FMCSA compliance programs, including driver qualification files and drug and alcohol testing administration, alongside third-party providers

Environmental compliance

  • Support industrial stormwater compliance under the EPA Multi-Sector General Permit, Sector N, including routine visual inspections and annual site evaluations
  • Support spill prevention (SPCC), universal waste and battery handling, refrigerant recovery documentation, and MassDEP recordkeeping
  • Maintain response procedures for radiation detection alarms on inbound material

Required Qualifications

  • A combination of education and experience demonstrating working knowledge of workplace safety. Any of the following will be considered:

– An associate or bachelor's degree in occupational safety, environmental health, industrial hygiene, or a related field; or

– Three or more years of safety, compliance, or supervisory experience in an industrial, manufacturing, construction, waste and recycling, or heavy equipment environment; or

– Completion of a trade or apprenticeship program plus experience carrying safety responsibilities in one of the environments above

  • OSHA 30-Hour General Industry (29 CFR 1910) card
  • Current First Aid / CPR / AED certification, or ability to obtain within 90 days
  • Working knowledge of OSHA general industry standards, with the ability to read and apply regulatory text
  • Ability to write clear procedures and training materials
  • Able to work outdoors year-round in an active yard with heavy mobile equipment
  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record

Preferred Qualifications

Training and certification for the following will be company paid.

  • Certified Safety and Health Official (CSHO) – General Industry, or individual OSHA numbered courses (OSHA 511, 521, 7000-series) through an OSHA Training Institute Education Center
  • Safety Trained Supervisor (STS) certification through the Board of Certified Safety Professionals
  • OSHA-authorized Outreach Trainer for General Industry (OSHA 501)
  • HAZWOPER 24- or 40-hour training, or 8-hour emergency response
  • DOT reasonable-suspicion training for supervisors (49 CFR 382.603); DOT hazmat employee training (49 CFR 172.704); RCRA hazardous waste generator training
  • Train-the-trainer certification for powered industrial trucks, aerial lifts, or overhead crane and magnet operations
  • Experience in scrap, recycling, demolition, or steel mill operations
  • Bilingual (Spanish)

A four-year safety degree and the CSP, ASP, or CIH credentials are not required.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Pay range: $65,000– $90,000 per year, depending on experience and credentials
