The Pathologists' Assistant (PA) performs highly specialized technical duties within the Pathology laboratory. The primary objective is the macroscopic description and dissection of all surgical specimens, ranging from routine to highly complex cases, ensuring the collection of all necessary macroscopic information for accurate diagnostic reporting. This role requires technical expertise, meticulous attention to detail, and adherence to strict laboratory protocols.

- Specimen Processing & Evaluation: Performs technical grossing and dictation of surgical specimens, evaluates clinical data to determine proper sampling, and executes complex procedures like frozen sections (dissection, sampling, and H&E staining).
- Quality Assurance & Documentation: Maintains accurate laboratory records, logs, cassette accuracy, and assists with Quality Improvement (QI) reviews and accreditation preparations.
- Coordination & Problem Resolution: Assures correct specimen accessioning, collection, submission, and handling/fixation, and communicates with internal/external clients to resolve specimen issues and obtain necessary clarification.
- Laboratory Maintenance & Compliance: Prepares specimens for special studies (e.g., flow cytometry, send-outs), maintains a clean, contamination-free workspace, and adheres strictly to safety, infection control, and patient confidentiality (HIPAA) guidelines.
- Bachelor of Science OR Master of Science degree from a NAACLS training program
- ASCP certification
