About the Position
The Building Attendant is responsible for warmly welcoming the many tenants, renters, artists, audience members, and guests of South Oxford Space’s 18 office spaces and 4 rehearsal studios, ensuring the safety and security of the building and its occupants, and preventing access to those who are not permitted in our facilities. This position will work closely with our Studio Rental Associate team, as well as our full-time Facilities staff. The position reports to Alex Etling, A.R.T./NY’s Director of Facilities.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Facilitating reliable access and a warm welcome to tenants, studio renters, audience members, and guests, and providing wayfinding directions when necessary.
- Working closely with our Studio Rental Associate team to anticipate moments of heavier building traffic or special events.
- Conducting periodic walkthroughs of the building when necessary.
- Fielding general questions about the facilities and A.R.T./New York membership and services.
- Working with a variety of populations, including children and adults with developmental disabilities.
- Prepping entrances for wheelchairs, strollers and deliveries; and responding to the needs of tenants as they arise.
- Maintaining knowledge & awareness of individuals who have been restricted from entry into A.R.T./NY’s facilities, and diligently preventing access, while always prioritizing de-escalation.
- Being responsible for the safety of building occupants during an emergency and responding quickly to threats.
- Contacting emergency services and building management in an emergency, and interfacing with first responders, including, but not limited to NYPD, EMS, FDNY, etc.
- Maintaining knowledge of A.R.T./NY’s Emergency Action Plans, and reliably implementing evacuation or emergency protocols whenever necessary.
- Completing detailed written incident reports when necessary, and alerting building management to building concerns or unusual activity
- Must possess a valid, active New York State Security Guard Registration card issued by the NYS Department of State. Continued employment requires strict compliance with state training requirements.
- Performing other duties as assigned.
The Building Attendant is a welcoming face of A.R.T./New York to all constituents. The ideal candidate is a friendly and approachable part of our arts community, and is reliable and punctual, observant and attentive to detail, an effective communicator, is comfortable interacting with diverse communities, can lift 30lbs, is comfortable walking at least 5 flight of stairs, and can sit or stand for extended periods of time.

This is a part-time in-person position at A.R.T./New York’s South Oxford Space at 138 South Oxford St in Brooklyn. While most shifts will be 7-8 hours in length, the number of shifts per week may vary based on availability, with a maximum of 30 hours per week. The rate for this position is $21/hour.
