POSITION SUMMARY

The Amphibious Excavator Equipment Operator operates specialized amphibious heavy equipment including floathoe excavators, sennegoben, and other waterway-based machinery for debris removal, environmental remediation, and stream restoration projects. This position requires expert-level proficiency in operating equipment in aquatic and wetland environments while adhering to safety protocols, environmental regulations, and project specifications.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Equipment Operation:

  • Operate amphibious excavators including floathoe, sennegoben, and similar equipment for waterway debris removal and stream restoration
  • Maneuver equipment in rivers, streams, ponds, wetlands, and aquatic environments with varying water depths
  • Execute precision excavation, debris extraction, and material handling per project specifications
  • Operate attachments including buckets, grapples, hydraulic shears, rakes, and waterway clearing tools
  • Operate standard excavators, backhoes, dozers, and other equipment as needed

Safety and Compliance:

  • Conduct preoperation equipment inspections and complete daily safety checklists
  • Adhere to OSHA, EPA, and company safety policies and environmental protection requirements
  • Maintain awareness of personnel, equipment, and environmental hazards
  • Use required PPE including life jackets, hard hats, safety boots, and other gear
  • Report equipment malfunctions, safety concerns, and environmental incidents immediately
  • Comply with FEMA debris removal standards and environmental protection guidelines

Project Execution:

  • Read and interpret project plans, site maps, and work orders
  • Coordinate with project managers, crew leaders, and support personnel
  • Execute debris removal for disaster recovery including hurricane and flood cleanup
  • Support streamflow rehabilitation, waterway restoration, and habitat preservation
  • Track daily production metrics and complete required documentation

Equipment Maintenance:

  • Perform routine operatorlevel maintenance including lubrication, fluid checks, and minor adjustments
  • Identify and report mechanical issues, hydraulic leaks, or structural damage
  • Maintain equipment cleanliness and ensure proper storage

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Assist with equipment mobilization and transport operations
  • Participate in safety meetings and training programs
  • Support 24/7 emergency response operations as required
  • Perform other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • 35 years documented experience operating amphibious excavators or floathoe equipment in waterway/aquatic environments
  • 5 years experience operating standard excavators, backhoes, and heavy equipment
  • Valid driver's license with clean record; CDL Class A or B preferred
  • OSHA 10Hour or 30Hour certification (or ability to obtain within 30 days)
  • Ability to pass preemployment drug and alcohol screening
  • Ability to pass background check and obtain security clearances for federal projects

Preferred:

  • Experience operating sennegoben or swamp buggy excavators
  • FEMA disaster response or emergency debris removal experience
  • Equipment operator certifications (NCCCO, NCCER, or manufacturer training)
  • EPA wetlands regulations and environmental protection knowledge
  • Hydraulics troubleshooting and field repair capabilities

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Expertlevel proficiency operating amphibious excavators in aquatic and wetland conditions
  • Advanced understanding of hydraulic systems, pontoon stability, and amphibious equipment mechanics
  • Strong spatial awareness and depth perception for underwater operations
  • Ability to calculate load capacities and equipment performance parameters
  • Strong safety mindset with adherence to protocols
  • Effective communication skills for crew coordination
  • Problemsolving abilities for adapting to changing conditions
  • Selfmotivated with ability to work independently

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

Physical Requirements:

  • Sit for extended periods (812 hours) in equipment operator seat with repetitive movements
  • Climb into and out of equipment using ladders and handholds multiple times daily
  • Lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly for equipment maintenance
  • Maintain balance and coordination on floating platforms and unstable terrain
  • Visual acuity to observe underwater conditions and monitor environment
  • Hearing capability to detect equipment sounds and radio communications

Work Environment:

  • Work performed in outdoor environments including rivers, streams, wetlands, and water bodies
  • Exposure to extreme weather including heat, cold, rain, humidity, and sun
  • Frequent exposure to water, mud, debris, and varying water depths
  • Noise levels from equipment operations requiring hearing protection
  • Vibration exposure from equipment operation
  • Extended hours, weekends, holidays, and emergency callouts may be required
  • Travel to project sites with potential overnight stays

EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS

Probationary Period:

All new employees are subject to a 90-day probationary period from the date of hire. During this period, employment performance, conduct, and suitability will be evaluated. Employment may be terminated at any time during the probationary period at the discretion of management.

Drug and Alcohol Testing:

Employees are subject to drug and alcohol testing throughout their employment in accordance with company policy and federal regulations. This includes:

  • Preemployment drug and alcohol screening (required before start date)
  • Random drug and alcohol testing during employment
  • Postaccident testing following workplace incidents or equipment damage
  • Reasonable suspicion testing when behavior indicates possible impairment
  • Returntoduty and followup testing as required

Refusal to submit to testing or positive test results will result in disciplinary action up to and including immediate termination of employment.
