Job Overview

  • We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Senior Customs Entry Writer to join our growing logistics team. This role is ideal for a customs professional with extensive knowledge of U.S. Customs regulations who thrives in a fast-paced environment and is passionate about compliance, accuracy, and exceptional customer service.
  • As a Senior Customs Entry Writer, you will be responsible for handling complex customs entries, ensuring regulatory compliance, resolving clearance issues, and serving as a subject matter expert for the customs team. You will work closely with customers, government agencies, carriers, and internal departments to facilitate the timely movement of international shipments while minimizing compliance risks. This role also provides leadership through mentoring team members, improving processes, and supporting operational excellence.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare, review, and transmit customs entries for a wide variety of imported commodities, ensuring compliance with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) regulations and all applicable government agency requirements.
  • Handle complex entries involving FDA, USDA, EPA, Fish & Wildlife, FCC, DOT, and other Partner Government Agencies (PGAs) as required.
  • Review commercial documentation to ensure accurate tariff classification, valuation, country of origin, and admissibility.
  • Proactively identify and resolve customs clearance issues to minimize shipment delays and ensure customer satisfaction.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on customs regulations, trade compliance, and import procedures, providing guidance to team members and other departments.
  • Mentor and train Customs Entry Writers, sharing best practices and supporting ongoing professional development.
  • Maintain strong relationships with customers, customs officials, freight forwarders, steamship lines, trucking companies, and government agencies.
  • Monitor shipments from arrival through final release, communicating proactively regarding delays, examinations, or documentation requirements.
  • Ensure complete and accurate recordkeeping in accordance with CBP record retention requirements and company policies.
  • Stay current on changes to customs regulations, trade agreements, tariff schedules, and import compliance requirements, communicating relevant updates to the team.
  • Assist management with audits, compliance reviews, KPI reporting, and process improvement initiatives.
  • Support continuous improvement efforts by identifying opportunities to increase efficiency, accuracy, and service quality.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years of Customs Entry Writer experience within a customs brokerage, freight forwarding, or logistics environment.
  • Strong knowledge of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) regulations, Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) classification, customs valuation, and import compliance.
  • Experience processing entries regulated by Partner Government Agencies (FDA, USDA, EPA, Fish & Wildlife, FCC, DOT, etc.).
  • Licensed Customs Broker (LCB) designation is a plus but not required.
  • Experience using CargoWise, Descartes, or other customs brokerage software preferred.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to resolve complex customs issues independently.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to build relationships internally and externally.
  • Demonstrated leadership, mentoring, or training experience preferred.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel and Outlook.
