Position: School Counselor, currently at AMS

Description:
Responsible for the development and implementation of the guidance program; assist and support students with concerns and/or problems; provide assistance to students in the development of sound decision making skills; serve as a resource for students, parents and staff; coordinate testing and scheduling for students.

Qualifications:


To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required.

  • Master's degree or equivalent from a four-year college or university
  • Appropriate state of Ohio certifications/license
  • One to two years related experience
  • Knowledge and skills in test administration and interpretation
  • Knowledge of school curriculum
  • Chemical dependency training
  • Behavior modification training
  • Basic knowledge of the nine dimensions of guidance
  • Strong communication skills and experience working effectively with people
  • Excellent public relations skills including courteousness, tact and good verbal communications.
  • Must be highly organized and attentive to detail
  • Demonstrates enthusiasm and a sincere desire to aid and ensure the safety of all.
  • Is able to accept constructive criticism/feedback
  • Demonstrate professional tact and diplomacy with administrators, staff, teachers, students, parents and the diverse community.
  • Is conscientious and assumes responsibility for one's own work performance.
  • Anticipates problems and unforeseen events and deals with them in an appropriate manner.
  • Proven attendance record and high moral character
  • Proven record of maintaining confidentiality
  • Promotes good social relationships as well as promoting good public relations by personal appearance, attitude and conversation.
  • Possesses the ability to be flexible and adaptable to changing situations.

Each staff member shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substance and abuse of any prescribed controlled substance in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the district.



Essential Functions:

  • Maintain accurate and complete records as required by the building administrator
  • Provide guidance to students to promote their welfare and proper educational development
  • Administration of standardized and proficiency tests
  • Attend meetings and in-services as required per negotiated agreement
  • Assist students in the transition from elementary school to intermediate school and from intermediate school to middle school or from middle school to high school as the individual case may be.
  • Attend parent/teacher conferences when necessary
  • Provide referrals to community agencies for students with special needs
  • Observe ethics of the teaching profession
  • Make provisions to be available to students and parents for educational related purposes outside the regular school day when necessary
  • Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with parents through effective use of interim reports, report cards, test results and conferences
  • Counsel with colleagues, students and parents
  • Be an active member of the school's IEP meetings
  • Keep abreast of current IDEA rules and regulations
  • Use proper forms for the IDEA process
  • Serve on the crisis intervention team
  • Aid students in the course selection process
  • Make home visitations when necessary
  • Support the implementation of behavioral modification programs
  • Serve as the district liaison with any assigned organizations
  • Assist Principal with administration, ordering, and general implementation of testing/proficiency program and interpretation of test results
  • Participation with the administrative team to plan, develop and implement effective guidance programs and curricular offerings
  • Develop and implement programs to support school and community needs, i.e., children of divorce support groups, etc.
  • Assist with seeking grant funding

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintain and improve professional competence by attending professional seminars, workshops, etc. to keep current on relevant issues
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Building Administrator, Superintendent, Board of Education or their designee
