Essential Functions:
- Assist patrons with locating and borrowing library materials, using computers, and accessing digital resources.
- Perform circulation duties, including checking materials in and out, managing holds, and processing library cards.
- Maintain the organization and appearance of library collections by shelving materials, shelf reading, and conducting inventory checks.
Job Duties:
- Provide general reference and reader’s advisory services to patrons.
- Assist with library programming, including story times, workshops, and special events.
- Support outreach efforts by participating in community events and promoting library services.
- Troubleshoot basic technology issues and assist patrons with public computers, printers, and other library equipment.
- Process new materials, mend damaged books, and withdraw outdated items from the collection.
- Enforce library policies and ensure a safe and respectful environment for all patrons.
- Perform clerical tasks such as answering phones, responding to inquiries, and maintaining patron records.
- Assist with displays, bulletin boards, and promotional materials to highlight library services.
- Handle monetary transactions for fines, fees, and book sales as needed.
- Confidently represent Allendale-Hampton-Jasper Regional Library System’s member values.
- Represent AHJ Regional Library System in the community and at community events.
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):
- High School diploma or equivalent preferred; some college coursework preferred.
- Prior experience in a library, customer service, or clerical role is a plus.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to interact effectively with diverse populations.
- Proficiency in basic computer skills, including email, Microsoft Office, and internet navigation.
- Ability to learn library software and assist patrons with digital resources.
- Attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
- Availability to work evenings and weekends as needed. The schedule for this position is M, T, W, F & Sat
- Bilingual in English and Spanish or another language commonly spoken in the community is a plus.

The Library Assistant is primarily responsible for supporting daily library operations. This position also plays a vital role in assisting patrons, maintaining library materials, and ensuring a welcoming environment for all visitors.
