What are the responsibilities and job description for the Farmworker/laborer position at Allegan County Ag Association, LLC?
Worker will be required to perform a variety of tasks under supervision in orchard and nursery operation.
Worker will be required to complete the following activities: general farm, orchard and nursery maintenance; weeding; shoveling; hoeing; mowing; thinning; pruning; grafting; tie trees; planting and transplanting fruit trees; trunk painting; hand fertilizing; install tree screens/grow tubes; lay mylar in orchard; drive and operate vehicles, tractors or other agricultural equipment such as forklifts; routine general repairs and maintenance of farm equipment and tools on farm; conduct farm building repairs; construct and maintain trellis; maintain deer fencing; install and maintain irrigation systems and drain tile; pack employer’s produce into various containers; clean and sanitize packing line equipment and building while abiding by all safety and food security policies; complete harvest preparation tasks such as spreading liners in bins, wash and sanitize harvesting bins or repair harvesting bins or place bins in orchard; hand harvest apples, peaches, raspberries, Christmas trees and nursery stock to quality standards; spray crops with tractor and spray attachment.
Worker will care for and maintain various evergreens by preparing fields/soil for planting; trim trees, shear, stake, straighten or complete cone removal; spread compost and wood chips around nursery; sort Christmas Trees by size and grade; apply colorant to trees; use mechanical tree baler; harvest bough material; hand plant seedlings; ready nursery stock for digging; Workers will harvest tree seedlings and transplants by hand. Worker will sort, grade, count and package seedlings into crates to prepare for shipping.
Worker will complete general hand tasks to include picking up garbage around the orchard/nursery, removing old trees/shrubs, string and wire from trellis and orchard blocks; picking up sticks, rocks and brush throughout the farm; conduct various field and farm clean up tasks at the end of the season.
