The Director of Nursing (DON) is responsible for the overall clinical operations of the nursing department. Responsibilities:
- Supervises nursing care provided by registered nurses, licensed vocational/practical nurses and others for whom they are administratively or professionally responsible.
- Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organizational policies and applicable laws and regulations.
- Supervisory responsibilities include:
- Interviews, hires and trains employees.
- Plans, assigns and directs work.
- Prepares work assignment sheets, taking into consideration Resident safety, the educational preparation, experience, knowledge and ability of the persons to whom the assignments are made.
- Transfers employees among units as needed.
- Prepares performance evaluations with the understanding that such evaluations impact tenure of probationary employees and wage increases of non-probationary employees.
- Disciplines employees up to and including discharge.
- Approves the correction of errors in timecards or other timekeeping records.
- Authorizes overtime as necessary.
- Receives and resolves employee complaints.
- Determines rotation of employees within facility.
- Monitors and corrects job performance of employees.
- Adequately supervises assigned staff and assures that those staff are supervising employees assigned to them.
- Oversee facility in absence of higher-ranking management officials.
- Uses independent judgment and discretion on behalf of the organization in the performance of these duties.
Education and/or Experience:
- A graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing, Bachelor’s degree in nursing preferred.
- Progressive nursing leadership experience in a Skilled Nursing Facility or related healthcare setting.
- Management of supervisor experience in long-term care, restorative or geriatric nursing preferred.
- Knowledgeable in state and federal regulations governing long-term care.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
- Registered Nurse who is currently licensed to practice by the state.
- Current CPR certification or CPR certified within 90 days of employment.
