DEFINITION
Under supervision of the appropriate administrator, performs and oversees a wide variety of specialized clerical and technical duties required in the planning, scheduling, operating and coordinating a learning center; values and promotes the mission and vision of the college.
 
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
An instructional assistant is a paraprofessional characterized by possession of at least a college degree in an appropriate field. Incumbents are expected to assume considerable responsibility for the clerical and technical operations of a department’s learning center, which provides remedial and supplemental instruction to students. Instructional assistants are required to perform at a skilled level with a considerable degree of independence in the learning center. Incumbents may be expected to operate the center alone for extended time periods throughout the day. An instructional assistant receives direction and technical supervision from the developmental math lead faculty person and the department chair.
  1. Oversees peer tutors within the math center and provides input on evaluations.
  2. Maintains order and discipline in the math center.
  3. Updates, maintains, and stores math center records.
  4. Organizes learning materials and schedules lab time with instructors.
  5. Orders materials and supplies for the math center and Math classes as needed.
  6. Tracks and reports student attendance and achievement in the math center.
  7. May develop and disseminate posters, handouts, and other informational materials about the learning center and its services.
  8. Operates and instructs in the use of computerized learning materials.
  9. Reports to the department chair and the developmental math lead faculty for program modification approval.
  10. Assists department instructors in the design and development of learning center materials.
  11. Administers quizzes and tests.      
  12. Tutors and assists students on an individual basis at the developmental math level and prescribes practice worksheets.
  13. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge of:
  • College-level subject area germane to learning laboratory assignment;
  • Tutorial techniques for remedial students;
  • Filing and business correspondence;
  • Modern office practices and procedures, including the use of computer spreadsheets and word processing, filing, correct English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation are also desirable.

Demonstrates ability to:
  • Perform at a college graduate level in the assigned academic field;
  • Tutor students effectively;
  • Learn center and department operation, procedures and practices;
  • Learn, interpret, and apply department policies and procedures relating to the center with sound judgment;
  • Analyze situations accurately and make judgments on center matters without immediate supervision;
  • Assess and report student achievement;
  • Provide instructional assistance and technical advice to students on the availability and uses of instructional materials and equipment;
  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions.

Working Conditions:
  • Duties are primarily performed in an office environment, at a desk or at a computer.
  • The incumbent will experience interruptions while performing normal duties during the regular workday.
  • The incumbent will have contact, in person or on the telephone, with staff, students and the general public.

Physical Demands:
  • Typically may sit for extended periods of time;
  • Operates a computer;
  • Communicates effectively over the telephone, via email and in person;
  • Regularly lifts, carries and/or moves objects weighing up to 20 pounds.

Special Qualification:
Evidence of a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of staff and students and to staff and students with disabilities.
Education and Experience: 
Equivalent to an associate’s degree in Mathematics or related field and one year experience related to operating a tutor center with an emphasis in mathematics is desirable.

The desired start date is August 2026.  This is a part-time, 18-hour, classified, 10-month position. 

Work Schedule: Monday - Wednesday 12:00 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.
