What are the responsibilities and job description for the Quality Control Inspector position at All Steel Construction?
Position Summary:
All Steel is seeking a meticulous Quality Control Inspector to lead our shop-level inspection process and ensure every structural steel member meets our high standards of craftsmanship. The ideal candidate has an expert eye for detail, a deep understanding of AWS welding codes, and the ability to verify that all beams, columns, and assemblies match our shop drawings exactly before they leave the facility.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform detailed visual inspections of shop welds (fillet, CJP, PJP) for size, profile, and defects in accordance with AWS D1.1 standards
- Conduct fit-up inspections to verify dimensions, hole placements, and component orientation against shop drawings before final production welding
- Measure and document coating thickness (DFT) using gauges to ensure paint and primer applications meet project specifications
- Check structural tolerances for sweep, camber, and overall length using precision measuring tapes, squares, and levels per AISC standards
- Maintain digital and physical quality records, including daily inspection logs, piece-mark sign-offs, and Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs)
- Collaborate with shop foremen and fitters to resolve discrepancies early in the fabrication process to minimize rework
Qualifications:
- 3 years of experience in structural steel quality control or fabrication inspection required
- AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) status is highly preferred
- Expertise in reading shop drawings, blueprints, and welding symbols (AISC standards)
- Proficiency with QC tools, including bridge cam gauges, fillet gauges, and ultrasonic or magnetic testing equipment
- Strong technical documentation skills and a high level of professional integrity
- Ability to navigate a shop environment, including climbing on/around large steel assemblies and lifting up to 50 lbs
