What are the responsibilities and job description for the Applied Physics position at Alignerr?
Applied Physics (AI Training)
About The Role
What if your years of physics training could directly shape how AI understands the physical world — from quantum mechanics to thermodynamics? We're looking for PhD-level Applied Physicists to stress-test cutting-edge AI models, expose their blind spots, and help ensure they reason in ways that actually respect the laws of the universe.
This is a fully remote, flexible contract role. No AI background needed — just deep mastery of physics and a sharp, rigorous mind.

- Organization: Alignerr
- Type: Hourly Contract
- Location: Remote
- Commitment: 10–40 hours/week
- Design advanced, open-ended physics problems — think PhD qualifying exam difficulty — that require multi-step reasoning and mathematical derivation
- Author rigorous "golden response" solutions with precise step-by-step workings, correct physical constants, and flawless unit conversions
- Audit AI-generated solutions and simulations for physical consistency, identifying where models "hallucinate" results that violate first principles
- Provide structured, expert feedback that improves AI reasoning around boundary conditions, conservation laws, and physical constraints
- Work independently and asynchronously — fully on your own schedule
- Holds a PhD (completed or near completion) in Applied Physics, Physics, Engineering Physics, or a closely related field
- Deep mastery across the core pillars of physics: Classical Mechanics, Electrodynamics, Statistical Mechanics, and Quantum Mechanics
- Exceptionally clear analytical writer — able to explain complex derivations and physical phenomena in structured, precise English
- Uncompromising attention to detail when it comes to units, scientific notation, and logical proof structure
- Self-motivated and consistent when working independently
- No prior AI experience required
- Experience with data annotation, scientific dataset evaluation, or quality assurance workflows
- Proficiency with computational tools such as Python (NumPy/SciPy), MATLAB, or COMSOL
- Background in research-level benchmarking or academic problem-setting
- Work on high-impact AI projects alongside world-leading research labs
- Fully remote and flexible — work when and where it suits you
- Freelance autonomy with the structure of meaningful, intellectually rigorous work
- Gain hands-on exposure to how frontier AI models are built and trained
- Contribute to ensuring AI systems respect the fundamental laws of the physical world
- Potential for ongoing work and contract extension as new projects launch
