What are the responsibilities and job description for the CNC Machinist position at Alien Engineered Products?
We're building out the next chapter of our precision machining operation and we're looking for someone who can own it. This is a hands-on lead role for a machinist who knows how to run a shop — setups, tooling decisions, tight tolerances, and all.
You'll be working alongside our current master machinist, for as long as it takes to get fully up to speed — no artificial deadline. When the time is right, this is your shop.
This is not a helper position. We serve Fortune 500 industrial customers under ASME certification. We hold tight tolerances, run a multi-customer book of business, and operate at a level where the work has to be right the first time. What you'll do
- Set up and operate manual engine lathe — turning, facing, boring, threading, knurling, and parting across a wide range of materials
- Set up and operate CNC vertical machining center (VMC) and manual vertical mill for milling, drilling, tapping, boring, and contouring
- Run surface grinder, drill press, horizontal band saw, and additional shop equipment as production demands
- Select speeds, feeds, depths of cut, and tooling based on material type and feature requirements — independently
- Perform in-process and final inspection using micrometers, calipers, bore gauges, height gauges, thread gauges, and surface plates
- Manage job sequencing and machine utilization across a multi-customer book of business
- Provide cycle time estimates and setup hour inputs to support outside sales quoting
- Maintain tooling inventory, preventive maintenance records, and a clean, organized shop environment
What we're looking for
- 4 years of hands-on machining experience — journeyman-level preferred
- Proven ability to run manual lathe and vertical mill setups independently, from print to finished part
- Full print reading capability, including GD&T, surface finish callouts, thread specs, and dimensional tolerances
- Proficiency with precision measurement instruments
- Experience across a variety of materials: carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum, cast iron, and industrial alloys
- Ability to manage multiple jobs and prioritize against live customer delivery commitments
- High school diploma or GED required; machinist apprenticeship or technical training preferred
Bonus points if you have
- Experience in a certified manufacturing environment (ASME, ISO, or equivalent)
- CNC programming experience — conversational or G-code
- Background with duplex stainless, exotic alloys, or pressure-bearing applications
- Job shop or engineered-to-order production experience
- Forklift or overhead crane certification
