What are the responsibilities and job description for the Zoning Administrator position at Algoma Township?
Responsibilities Include
· Review, interpret, apply, and enforce the Zoning Ordinance, Land Division Ordinance, Private Road Ordinance and other Township Ordinances. Issue all land use, sign, and other permits for the Township.
· Act as staff and attend all Planning Commission, Township Board, Parks and Recreation, Marina, and Zoning Board of Appeals meetings. Assemble packet information for each Board.
. Oversee zoning enforcement.
. Supervise and work closely with Zoning Assistant.
· Review all site plan and special use applications along with the Site Plan Review Committee for completeness and prepare for Planning Commission review as well as applications for Zoning Board of Appeals.
· Prepare recommendations to Township attorney or draft amendments to the Zoning Ordinance, Master Plan and other ordinances/documents as requested by appropriate board.
· Publish and mail all required notices as directed by State law, ordinance, or policy.
· Assist applicants, property owners, developers and residents with the application process, answering phone calls, and walk ins.
· Assist other staff and departments as needed.
Hours:
32-40 per week
Education and Experience:
- A high school diploma is required. An Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in planning or a related field is preferred.
- Three or more years of experience in a planning office or related field is strongly preferred.
- Must have completed or be willing to complete the Michigan Zoning Administrator Certificate Program.
- Knowledge and understanding of local land – use and planning ordinances and regulations, and site plan review processes.
- Skill in interpreting and applying planning guidelines and zoning ordinances.
- Skill in the use of office equipment and technology, including computers and related software, and the ability to master new technologies.
- Skill in maintaining accurate files and in preparing related reports.
- Ability and willingness to pursue professional development opportunities and remain abreast of current issues and progressive methods related to municipal planning.
- Ability to establish effective working relationships and use good judgement, initiative and resourcefulness when dealing with citizens, elected and appointed officials, employees and others.
- Ability to attend evening meetings or other regular business hours.
- Skill in reviewing and interpreting topographic maps, site plans, blueprints, specifications and complex construction drawings.
- A Michigan Vehicle Operator’s License.
- Ability to travel to other locations as needed.
License/Certification:
- Driver's License (Required)
