Job Summary:
The Paraprofessional supports the instructional and classroom management efforts of certified teachers in general education and/or special education settings. This role assists in implementing lesson plans, working with individual students or small groups, and providing behavioral and academic support. Paraprofessionals help maintain a positive and productive classroom environment and contribute to the physical, emotional, and academic well-being of all students.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist the classroom teacher in delivering instructional activities and lessons.
- Work with students individually or in small groups to reinforce learning concepts, complete assignments, or practice skills.
- Adapt classroom materials and activities to meet individual student needs under the direction of the teacher.
- Support the implementation of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), 504 Plans, and behavior intervention plans (BIPs) as needed.
- Supervise students in the classroom, hallways, cafeteria, playground, and during arrival/dismissal or transitions.
- Assist in maintaining a clean, safe, and organized classroom environment.
- Support classroom routines, behavior management strategies, and safety protocols.
- Promote positive social interactions and help students develop self-regulation skills.
- Collaborate with teachers, specialists, and other school staff to support student learning and engagement.
- Communicate effectively and respectfully with students, staff, and families.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding student information and school matters.
- Participate in staff meetings, training sessions, and professional development as required.
- Prepare and organize instructional materials as directed by the teacher.
- Assist with classroom displays, bulletin boards, or student portfolios.
- Help track student progress and behavior by recording observations or completing data collection forms.
- Perform other related duties as assigned
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent (required).
- Associate’s degree or two years of postsecondary education (preferred, or as required by state/federal guidelines for Title I schools).
- Paraprofessional certification, if required by state or district.
- Pass the ETS Para-Pro Assessment 450 score and higher
- Experience working with children in an educational or childcare setting is preferred.
- Patience, empathy, and a commitment to student success.
- Ability to follow directions, work independently, and take initiative.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Basic technology skills (e.g., using a computer, educational software, or digital devices).
- Ability to maintain professionalism and confidentiality in all settings.
Physical Demands:
- Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, and lift up to 30 pounds.
- May be required to assist with physical or mobility needs of students.
- Must be able to respond quickly to situations involving student safety or behavioral needs.
Work Environment:
- Work is primarily in a classroom setting, with possible time spent outdoors or in other school areas.
- Frequent interaction with students, teachers, and staff.
- May require occasional participation in after-school events or meetings.
