The Outreach Assistant (Library Assistant I) is part of the team responsible for Alexandria Library’s system-wide outreach services operating out of Beatley Central Library. Under the direction of the Outreach Coordinator, the individual in this position will be responsible for organizing, executing, and staffing outreach activities within the community.
Position Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assists the Outreach Services Coordinator with the information, circulation, and program services related to Alexandria Library’s outreach objectives, including things pertaining to the Outreach Vehicle.
- Represents Alexandria Library at indoor and outdoor outreach events throughout the City of Alexandria Prepares for outreach events
- - including but not limited to loading and unloading outreach vehicles, driving outreach vehicles, setting up events and tearing down events.
- Performs basic circulation functions such as checking books in and out and creating library cards.
- Helps manage customer relations as an Outreach Department point of contact.
- Coordinates the promotion of Library outreach, services, and collections to the community.
- Trains/arranges training for other Alexandria Library staff and volunteers who are providing services at outreach events.
- Helps maintain an outreach calendar and staff outreach opportunity sign-up system Assists at community outreach events with City agencies, county agencies, and other organizations.
- Assists in the planning, development, delivery, and promotion of in-person programs for Outreach services.
- Maintains and develops Outreach resources, including office space, print materials and technology, and inventory.
- Develops Outreach resources such as print materials for promotion.
- Safely operates library vehicles, including the Outreach Electric Vehicle, to facilitate the delivery of library services, materials, and programs.
- Assists with maintenance procedures for the Outreach Vehicle, as needed.
- Performs routine data entry.
- Take shifts at the Circulation Desk, as needed.
- Assists with special projects as required.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Two-year college degree or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Able and willing to pass City of Alexandria driving training.
- Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record. Willingness to travel (usually within the City of Alexandria
- Knowledge of public library reference tools, including web and database searching.
- Strong verbal and interpersonal communication skills; the ability to work effectively with diverse groups of people; and the ability to organize and juggle multiple tasks.
- Demonstrate oral and written communication and presentation skills.
- Have commitment to community, public service, and providing exceptional customer service.
- Ability to operate relevant computer systems including hardware and software, such as Google Suite, Microsoft Office Suite, electronic databases, e-mail, and internet in addition to other office equipment.
Preferred Qualifications: - Bilingual in English and Spanish, Amharic, or Arabic preferred.
- Library experience not required, but beneficial
- General knowledge of literature, reference and information materials, publishers, and periodicals
Education Level
Two-Year College Degree or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Pay Rate: $20.9905- $32.0510 per hour
Benefits: Accrues sick and annual leave
Schedule: Hours are scheduled to meet the needs of the Library and will include evenings, Saturdays and occasional Sundays. Days with evening and weekend hours.

Youth Services Assistant (Library Assistant II)
Part-Time (20 Hours a Week) – Burke Branch Library
The Burke Branch Library is seeking enthusiastic, creative candidates for a Library Assistant II position.
The ideal candidate will have exceptional customer service skills and the desire to contribute to a
growing Youth Services Department that serves a very diverse community. Under the supervision of the
Youth Services Manager, this position is responsible for staffing the Youth Services Desk, planning and
presenting programs to children and young adults, maintaining the youth collection and creating
displays.
Position Duties and Responsibilities:
- Staffing the Youth Services Desk to assist library users with library technology and readers advisory
- Providing technology instruction to customers and troubleshooting in the use of the Internet, word processing, computers, printers and copiers
- Communicating information about library activities, facilities, rules and services to users of the library
- Creating displays and other promotional materials
- Shelving, shelf-reading and conducting other collection management related tasks
- Assisting customers in choosing and finding Children’s/Young Adult materials
- Planning and presenting programs for ages 0-18, including summer reading and special programs
- Working with, and collaborating with, tweens and teens, and volunteers ages 11-18, including those with diverse backgrounds and abilities
- Other duties as assigned
Skills and Abilities:
- Two-year college degree
- At least one year of experience at the level equivalent to the Library Assistant I; or any equivalent
combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
- Some knowledge of library practices and procedures
- Familiarity with integrated library and computer systems
- Knowledge of Children’s/Young Adult literature and programming
- Excellent command of the English language
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and customers
- Applicant must demonstrate patience with children of all ages and their families, teachers and caregivers
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree
- Experience in working with very young children
- Some teaching experience to provide guidance when using library resources and to assist with technology instruction
- A passion for serving people from many cultures
Schedule: Hours are scheduled to meet the needs of the branch and will include mornings, afternoons, one evening per week and rotating Saturdays.
