The Alexandria Library is looking for energetic and enthusiastic individuals to join our team. The ideal candidate will have an exceptional work ethic, a willingness to learn, and the desire to contribute to a busy, community-oriented branch.

Position Duties and Responsibilities:

Answer questions in person, via telephone or email, and provide instruction on using the library catalog, databases and public computer equipment.
Assist library users in routine selection and location of library materials.
Check library materials in and out for library users.
Collect fines and fees, issue library cards and revise registration records.
Assist customers with the use of library catalogs and other databases, Internet computers, printer and copy machine.
Assist with assigned responsibilities for passport acceptance services, for example: processing passports, mailing passports, keeping statistics, managing the customer list and assisting customers and staff with passport procedures, training new staff
Shelf-reading, inventory and withdrawal of library materials.
Additional duties as assigned.


Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Excellent customer service orientation and the ability to work well with the public under demanding and sometimes difficult circumstances.
Ability to work independently, as well as to work well with other staff as a contributing team member.
Previous library experience at the page, library aide or library assistant level is desirable.
Extensive knowledge of integrated library systems preferred.
Experience with computers and Microsoft Office.
Ability to maintain records and prepare reports.
Foreign language skills are preferred


Minimum Requirements:

  • Two-Year College Degree or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to read, speak, and write well in English.
  • Basic arithmetic and computer skills.
  • Must be able to lift and carry at least 15 pounds.
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities;
  • US Citizenship is required for passport services.

Salary: $18.6706- - $32.8571 per hour

Benefits: Earns annual and sick leave and is eligible for health insurance, retirement, life insurance, long-term disability insurance and long-term care insurance.

Schedule: Hours are scheduled to meet the needs of the Library, and will include days, evenings, and weekends.

Custodian Supervisor

Full time/ All Locations

40 Hours per week

A Custodian Supervisor supervises and performs custodial duties for one or more public buildings. An employee in this class is responsible for planning, assigning and supervising the work and training of Custodians engaged in cleaning and minor maintenance tasks. Responsibilities may include coordination of activities on a multiple shift operation in a group of public buildings. Specific oral and written instructions accompany major assignments but the employee makes routine decisions and is responsible for planning work schedules and methods. Work is performed under general supervision and is reviewed on the basis of results obtained.

Duties include:

  • Supervises custodial staff and facility operation;
  • Routinely performs custodial duties at one or more of the Library Branches;
  • Directs other employees and oversees all work activities for the purpose of insuring that assignments are completed in a safe, proper and timely manner;
  • Evaluates and implements projects for the purpose of carrying out goals and objectives within area of responsibility;
  • Supervises custodial functions (e.g. planning, scheduling, training, discipline, evaluation) for the purpose of insuring the Department functions in a safe and efficient manner;
  • Reviews prospective custodial candidates (e.g. screening, interviewing, etc.) for the purpose of hiring new custodial staff;
  • Plans cleaning schedules and sequences custodial work operations to assure an even flow and distribution of work, expeditious opening of buildings for meetings and rentals, and the meeting of schedules and deadlines;
  • Reviews custodial work schedules to meet changes in workload considering such factors as peak loads, availability of custodians, and time required to perform the custodial work;
  • Assigns work to subordinate custodians, explains work requirements, instructs them in proper custodial methods, reviews completed work and evaluates it for quality and quantity;
  • Sets standards of adequacy for completion of prescribed custodial tasks;
  • Coordinates custodial operations with custodial representatives in other buildings, concerning matters of work remaining to be done, work priorities and custodial procedures;
  • Reassigns crews and custodial personnel, as necessary, in order to accomplish custodial work in the most effective manner;
  • Supervises the periodic checks and minor repair of lighting and plumbing equipment, replacement of fuses, burned out bulbs, fluorescent tubes and starters;
  • Acts as liaison for requests for skilled repairs in emergencies or as maintenance work is required;
  • Maintains the level of custodial supplies on hand to accomplish tasks (within budget guidelines), coordinates the ordering of supplies and equipment, and ensures that custodial equipment is maintained in good working condition, keeping accurate maintenance and repair records and physical inventory records of cleaning equipment;
  • Anticipates repair/maintenance needs and takes preventative measures to maintain service and safety levels;
  • Receives and store incoming stock, deliver stock and equipment to all health department sites;
  • Performs building inspections, minor maintenance/repairs at all sites, sends routine and emergency work orders, serves as liaison to City General Services;
  • Performs other related duties.

Essential Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of materials, supplies and practices essential to the cleaning of buildings; thorough knowledge of the operation and care of wet and dry vacuum cleaners, floor buffing machines, mop wringers, mops, brushes, soaps, floor stripping materials, cleaning fluids, floor waxes and other materials and equipment related to care of buildings; thorough knowledge of the hazards and precautionary methods necessary to custodial operations; ability to assign and check the work of subordinates and to train and instruct employees in building cleaning operations and safety; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, building occupants and the public; ability to maintain necessary records relating to custodial task operations and prepare simple written reports.

  • Must be able to lift 20-50 lbs. on a regular basis without help and carry custodial materials, office supplies, furniture, tools, and other materials in a safe and secure manner
  • Must have a valid local driver's license and be insurable by the Alexandria Library’s insurance company
  • Must own or have regular access to an automobile, and must be able to travel to different locations - when needed. Employees will be reimbursed at the current federal mileage reimbursement rate.

Schedule: Hours are scheduled to meet the needs of the Library and will include evenings, Saturdays and occasional Sundays.

Salary: $41,147.08- $72,410.52
