School Based Dental Health Coordinator

Position Description

Provides administrative and clerical support for the School Based Oral Health Dental program as part of the Alexander County Dental Clinic. The Coordinator oversees the school based dental program and related functions. An Employee in this class provides reception type duties in the promotion and education of dental health in the local school system. This position will provide information on the prevention of dental disease to students and parents. The employee will assist with dental services at the Alexander County Dental Clinic as needed. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Dentist.

Responsibilities

• Handles all enrollment paperwork including printing, distribution, and collection.
• Works with Alexander County School personnel to promote, coordinate, and implement on-site dental services.
• Promotes and advertises the dental program through community events and school open houses.
• Maintains patient confidentiality.
• Coordinates and works with the patient care team.
• Provides reception duties including scheduling appointments.
• Communicates with parents regarding insurance eligibility and treatment needs.
• Prepares charts; maintains patient record files, reports, and letters.
• Performs related duties as required.

• Considerable knowledge of dental equipment, instruments, and procedures.
• Considerable knowledge of dental office business procedures.
• Considerable knowledge of preparation methods and dental materials.
• Ability to maintain records, inventories, and patient histories.
• Ability to deal tactfully with patients.

Required Minimum Education / Experience

• Graduation from an accredited dental assisting program; or
• Graduation from high school and one year of on-the-job training as a dental assistant;
• Required x-ray training when needed; or
• An equivalent combination of education and experience.

Equivalent Training and Experience

Full time employment as a chair side assistant (Dental Assistant I) by a dentist licensed in NC for three preceding consecutive years, completion of a Board approved course intraoral radiography, and completion of didactic training in a dental assisting course approved by Board that must include asepsis and dental emergencies.

Successful completion of the certification examination administered by the Dental Assisting National Board and completion of a formal educational program in radiography (which includes an examination) consisting of at least 40 clock hours; and completion of equivalent training and experience as approved by the Board. An assistant may submit qualifications (evidence of education, training, and work experience) to the Board for its consideration provided that proof of the required 40 clock hour radiography course is included. Requests are considered by the Board during regular meetings, which occur monthly.

This is a grant funded position through The Duke Endowment which will last the duration of available funding and is also based on program sustainability.
