What are the responsibilities and job description for the Chief Executive Officer position at Alera Bio?

Role Overview

Alera Bio is seeking a foundational Chief Executive Officer to lead the company through its next phase of growth—from preclinical development and capital formation through IND submission and early clinical execution.

The CEO will be responsible for setting corporate strategy, building the leadership team, advancing AB-101 toward the clinic, and representing Alera Bio to investors, partners, regulators, and the rare-disease community. This role requires a hands-on operator with deep experience in early-stage biotech company building, fundraising, and rare-disease development.

Key Responsibilities

Corporate & Strategic Leadership

  • Define and execute Alera Bio’s corporate strategy, development roadmap, and long-term value creation plan.
  • Lead alignment across scientific, regulatory, clinical, and commercial planning from pre-IND through early clinical stages.
  • Partner closely with the Board to drive governance, milestone accountability, and strategic decision-making.
  • Establish Alera’s operating cadence, culture, and performance metrics.

Capital Formation & Investor Engagement

  • Lead all fundraising activities, including seed, bridge, Series A, and non-dilutive financing (e.g., NIH SBIR/STTR).
  • Develop compelling investor narratives grounded in science, regulatory strategy, and unmet need.
  • Manage relationships with existing investors, prospective institutional partners, and strategic collaborators.
  • Oversee financial planning, budgeting, and runway management.

Program & Portfolio Oversight

  • Provide executive oversight of AB-101 development, ensuring disciplined execution toward IND readiness.
  • Partner with the CSO, CRO and advisors to ensure scientific rigor and regulatory alignment.
  • Drive prioritization decisions across formulation, preclinical studies, and development pathways.
  • Ensure integration of regulatory strategy (Orphan Drug, Rare Pediatric Disease, PRV considerations) into development planning.

Team Building & External Partnerships

  • Recruit and lead a high-caliber executive and advisory team (scientific, regulatory, clinical, and operational).
  • Build relationships with KOLs, patient advocacy groups, foundations, and academic collaborators.
  • Serve as the external face of the company at scientific, investor, and industry forums.
  • Foster strong partnerships with CROs, consultants, and development vendors.

Governance, Compliance & Operations

  • Ensure corporate compliance, risk management, and adherence to best practices in biotech governance.
  • Oversee legal, IP, and corporate development activities in collaboration with counsel.
  • Prepare board materials, updates, and strategic recommendations with clarity and discipline.

Qualifications

Required

  • 15 years of experience in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, or life sciences leadership roles.
  • Demonstrated success building and scaling early-stage biotech companies (preclinical to clinical).
  • Experience raising institutional capital and managing investor relationships.
  • Strong understanding of rare disease drug development and regulatory pathways.
  • Proven ability to translate complex science into compelling strategic and commercial narratives.
  • Exceptional leadership, communication, and decision-making skills.

Preferred

  • Prior CEO, President, or COO experience in a venture-backed biotech company.
  • Track record of IND submissions and early clinical development.
  • Experience with pediatric, endocrine, metabolic, or neurological indications.
  • Familiarity with Orphan Drug, Rare Pediatric Disease, and Priority Review Voucher frameworks.
  • Established network across investors, regulators, and rare-disease stakeholders.

Why Join Alera Bio

  • Lead a first-in-class rare disease program addressing a devastating pediatric disorder with no approved therapies.
  • Build a company at the intersection of endocrinology, neuroscience, and precision medicine.
  • Partner with a deeply experienced founder, engaged board, and mission-driven stakeholders.
  • Shape a platform with potential for meaningful patient impact and long-term value creation.
