Home Standby Generator Service Technician
Position Summary
We are seeking a skilled and dependable Home Standby Generator Service Technician to install, inspect, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair residential standby generator systems. The ideal candidate has strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting skills, takes pride in quality workmanship, and is committed to providing excellent customer service.
The technician will work directly with homeowners to diagnose generator issues, perform routine maintenance, complete repairs, and ensure standby power systems are operating safely and reliably.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform scheduled maintenance and inspections on residential standby generators.
- Diagnoses and troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, fuel-system, and control-system issues.
- Perform generator startups, testing, load-bank testing, and operational inspections as required.
- Repair or replace defective components, including batteries, spark plugs, belts, filters, sensors, control boards, starters, alternators, and related parts.
- Troubleshoot and service natural gas and propane generator fuel systems within the scope of applicable codes and licensing requirements.
- Inspect generator enclosures, wiring, connections, grounding, batteries, transfer switches, and related equipment.
- Install and commission residential standby generator systems when required.
- Read and interpret wiring diagrams, installation manuals, service manuals, and technical documentation.
- Use diagnostic tools, meters, and manufacturer-specific software or equipment as needed.
- Clearly document service findings, repairs performed, parts used, and recommended follow-up work.
- Communicate repair recommendations and system conditions clearly and professionally to homeowners.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
- Follow all company safety procedures, manufacturer specifications, and applicable electrical, mechanical, and building codes.
- Maintain company vehicles, tools, diagnostic equipment, and inventory.
- Participate in an on-call or emergency service rotation as required.
- Maintain current knowledge of generator products, technologies, and manufacturer service procedures.
Qualifications
- Previous experience servicing standby generators, small engines, electrical systems.
- Strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting abilities.
- Ability to read and understand wiring diagrams and technical manuals.
- Basic computer and mobile-device skills for service documentation and work orders.
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
- Ability to work independently and manage service calls efficiently.
- Strong communication and customer service skills.
- Professional appearance and demeanor when working in customers' homes.
- Ability to safely lift equipment and parts and perform physical work, including bending, kneeling, climbing, and working outdoors.
- Willingness to work occasional evenings, weekends, holidays, or emergency calls as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with residential Generac standby generator brands.
- Generator manufacturer certifications.
- Experience with automatic transfer switches and residential backup-power systems.
- Knowledge of natural gas and propane systems.
- Experience with generator monitoring systems and remote diagnostics.
- Previous residential service or field-service experience.
