Position Summary:

Peer tutors are viewed as academic student leaders and are significant contributors to the Albright community. Peer Tutors provide motivation for learning while working with students through their academic course needs. As members of the Peer Tutoring staff, tutors will work on an individual basis or in a small group sessions to review material with students requesting tutoring support. Tutoring support needs include, but are not limited to, answering questions on course content, providing review and feedback, studying/creating study material, providing writing-related skills, practice and preparation work to aid in the mastery of course content.

 

Peer tutors work a set schedule in the Peer Tutoring Studio for 4 hours per week including required paid training and staff meetings. Hours may increase by 1 -2 hours per week for high-need courses. Other job duties include leading class visits, helping to design and present workshops, tabling at admissions events, and assisting with special events. This is a great job for people who enjoy working with peers, and are organized, patient, and comfortable greeting/presenting. 

 

Essential Job Functions:

Peer Tutors are expected to assume the duties and responsibilities identified below. Tutors may be expected to perform additional functions that might be needed in their respective subject fields.

 

  • Attend tutor training and video training sessions as required by CRLA; participate in online discussions and staff meetings each semester (3-4 hrs/month).
  • Be available for at least 4 hours per week for tutoring throughout the semester.
  • Check appointment system daily and contact tutees when needed. 
  • Complete a brief Session Summary in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Be available to discuss a tutee’s work with a professor or supervisor upon request.
  • Participate in a self-evaluation process each semester. 
  • Follow Student Academic Support and college policies; establish and maintain credibility within the community; and behave in accordance with the College’s values and expectations. 


Qualifications/Prerequisites:


1.  COMMUNICATION

We expect that Peer Tutors will have a positive perspective of Albright College. 


2.  SKILLS

The best candidates to be Peer Tutors are current undergraduate students who are highly    dependable, have excellent communications skills, strong recommendations from their instructors, and an ability to work well with their peers.

 

All individuals in the Peer Tutor position should exhibit many of the following:

 

  • Mastery of subject being tutored and good overall academic ability
  • High degree of reliability, ability for flexibility in schedule as needed 
  • Clear spoken and written communication
  • Effective e-mail management
  • Strong writing skills across the academic disciplines including brainstorming, drafting, revising/editing, research and citation skills (writing support tutors)
  • Ability to be empathetic to students having difficulties
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality

 

3.  EXPERIENCE

Peer Tutors are selected on the basis of academic skill, leadership, character, and the ability to communicate well with others. Tutors are expected to have extensive knowledge of the subjects they are hired to tutor and the ability to communicate that knowledge to their peers. 

 

4.  EDUCATION

  • Earned a B or higher in the course(s) one will tutor 
  • Writing support tutor candidates should have completed both ENG 101 and ENG 102 and FYS
  • Completed Recommendation Form from instructor(s) of course one will tutor

5.  CERTIFICATION OPPORTUNITY

If hired, students must participate and complete the College Reading and Learning Association Level 1 Peer Tutor certification. The training series is offered within the first year of employment (first two semesters) and certification requires 10-12 hours of training and 25 contact hours of peer to peer tutoring. Trainings include group meetings, online content, and reading of scholarly tutoring/learning materials. Tutors will be training and tutoring simultaneously during their first semester of employment. 

Completion of training results in international certification by the College Reading and Learning Association (www.crla.net).
