The role of the Assistant Coach is crucial in designing and implementing program activities in accordance with applicable rules and regulations related to the sport. The Assistant Coach will provide supervision of student athletes during all aspects of their participation in the program, utilize sound instructional techniques, and serve as a positive role model to student athletes, the community, and various organizations. This position may be assigned to a specific sport at the Varsity or Junior Varsity level.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Game Analysis: Analyze the opposition's strategies for games/events before and during athletic events to assess strengths and weaknesses, aiding in the development of game plans.
  • Student Assessment: Evaluate student athletes to provide feedback on individual performance and determine team placement.
  • Participation in Meetings: Attend meetings, workshops, and conferences to receive and convey information pertinent to the role.
  • Strategy Development: Assist the Head Coach in developing game strategies/plans, preparing the team and individual student athletes for competition.
  • Safety Evaluations: Assess facilities and playing fields for potential hazards and make recommendations to reduce the risk of injury.
  • Instruction: Instruct student athletes to promote individual growth in athletic skills, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
  • Record Maintenance: Maintain records related to game/student athlete statistics, insurance, signed permission forms, emergency information, schedules, and equipment inventories to comply with district, athletic conference, and state requirements.
  • Academic Monitoring: Monitor student athletes' academic eligibility to comply with IHSA requirements and provide intervention for students needing assistance to maintain athletic eligibility.
  • Program Promotion: Promote the athletic program by conducting off-season clinics, providing information on skill camps, and attending community meetings to increase interest and participation.
  • Communication: Respond to inquiries from students, parents, school personnel, media representatives, and college representatives to provide information, assistance, and direction.
  • Supervision: Supervise student athletes during all activities, including competition, travel, meetings, and practices to ensure minimal risk of injury.
  • Support: Assist other athletic program staff, including the Head Coach, other coaches, and volunteers in their respective roles and functions.
  • Additional Duties: Perform other duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Job Requirements:

Skills:

  • Adaptability to changing work priorities.
  • Knowledge of administering first aid and applying pertinent laws, codes, policies, and/or regulations.
  • Ability to organize and communicate information effectively.

Knowledge:

  • Basic math skills.
  • Ability to review and interpret highly technical information, write technical materials, and speak persuasively.
  • Familiarity with equipment used in sports, injury prevention, IHSA concussion protocols, and relevant professional standards and practices.

Abilities:

  • Scheduling activities and meetings.
  • Data gathering and equipment operation.
  • Effective communication across diverse educational and cultural backgrounds.
  • Problem-solving skills and the ability to work under direct supervision within a defined budget.

Working Environment:
The role involves occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, along with some climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling. The job typically requires 10% sitting, 45% walking, and 45% standing. The environment may include exposure to temperature extremes and potential risk of injury or illness.
