What are the responsibilities and job description for the CAD Technician position at Alberty Group, LLC?
CAD Specialist — Plant Engineering & Document Control
Location: Geismar, Louisiana (on-site) Industry: Chemical Manufacturing Facility Employment Type: Contract Schedule: Straight days, 5x8 or 4x10 — OT as required Reports To: Document Control Supervisor Compensation: $38–$42/hr, DOE
Position Summary
Alberty Group is seeking a CAD Specialist to support engineering and document control at a chemical manufacturing facility in Geismar, LA. This position owns the accuracy and currency of the plant's drawing set — with primary emphasis on P&IDs — and is responsible for incorporating completed capital and maintenance project deliverables into the site's electronic document control vault. PLEASE DO NOT APPLY IF YOU DO NOT HAVE EXPERIENCE IN UPDATING AND CREATING P&IDs.
The successful candidate is a hands-on drafter who is equally comfortable redlining a P&ID at a desk and administering revision control across a multi-discipline drawing library. This is a drawing-accuracy and data-integrity role, not a design-from-scratch role.
Key Responsibilities
P&ID Maintenance
- Update and revise plant P&IDs from engineering redlines, MOC packages and as-built markups.
- Maintain consistent symbology, line numbering, equipment tagging, and instrument tagging.
- Track and process P&ID revisions in support of Management of Change (MOC) and Process Safety Information (PSI) requirements under OSHA 1910.119.
- Flag discrepancies to engineering.
Document Control & Vault Administration
- Incorporate completed project drawing packages into the site document control vault, ensuring correct numbering, revision level, title block data, metadata, and discipline classification.
- Maintain the master drawing index; retire, supersede, and archive obsolete revisions.
- Manage turnover of contractor and EPC deliverables — verify completeness, format compliance, and native-file delivery before acceptance into the vault.
- Convert, clean up, and vectorize legacy drawings, scanned prints, and inherited files as needed.
- Control drawing issue and access; support audit, PSM, and regulatory documentation requests.
Multi-Discipline Drawing Support
- Produce and maintain drawings across disciplines including:
- P&IDs
- Civil and site plans
- Underground utilities, sewer, firewater, and buried piping
- Instrumentation — loop sheets, hook-ups, instrument location plans, cable schedules
- Electrical — one-lines, area classification, conduit and tray routing, panel schedules
- Piping — plans, sections, isometrics, tie-in drawings, line lists
- Structural — foundations, platforms, pipe racks, steel details
- Equipment layouts, plot plans, and general arrangements
Project & Site Support
- Support capital projects, maintenance work orders, turnarounds, and reliability initiatives with accurate, timely drawing deliverables.
- Interface daily with process, mechanical, I&E, and project engineers, as well as contractor design teams.
- Enforce site CAD standards, layering conventions, title blocks, and file-naming protocols; recommend improvements where gaps exist.
Required Qualifications
- 4 years of CAD experience in a chemical, petrochemical, refining, or heavy industrial plant environment.
- Demonstrated experience updating and maintaining plant P&IDs, including redline incorporation and revision control.
- Demonstrated experience incorporating project files into an electronic document control system / drawing vault.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD; working knowledge of AutoCAD P&ID
- Ability to read and interpret drawings across multiple disciplines (civil, underground, instrument, electrical, piping, structural).
- Working understanding of plant tagging and numbering conventions, line lists, and equipment lists.
- Strong attention to detail and disciplined recordkeeping — this role is measured on accuracy.
- Must pass a background check, drug screen, physical and site-specific safety orientation.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate degree or technical certificate in Drafting & Design Technology, CAD, or a related field.
- Experience with document management platforms such as Meridian, SharePoint-based, or similar.
- Familiarity with MOC workflows.
- TWIC card and current site safety credentials
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
Office-based within an operating chemical manufacturing facility.
What Success Looks Like in the First 6 Months
- Backlog of outstanding P&ID redlines reduced to current.
- Open project turnover packages fully incorporated into the vault with verified metadata.
- Drawing index reconciled and accurate.
- Engineering and operations can locate the correct current revision of any drawing on first request.
