| General Definition of Work:
Performs a variety of duties required to maintain a safe and secure environment in schools, centers, academies, or for community education programs held during or after school, or on weekends when scheduled. Enforces policies and regulations designed to create a culture of safety and security in the school district. Manages students’ activity and behavior during school and at school-sponsored public events. Assists in response to emergency situations. |

| Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, and develop effective working relationships with students, parents, and staff. Ability to follow procedures and directions. Must be able to maintain order in schools without physically restraining students. Ability to analyze situations and take reasonable and effective action while exercising good judgment. Knowledge of local, county, and state regulations requiring an alcohol-, drug-, weapons-, and tobacco-free environment. Must have knowledge and experience in working in a diverse environment that promotes an equitable learning environment. |
Education and Experience: High school diploma or achievement of a General Equivalency Diploma (GED) certificate plus at least one (1) year relevant work experience required. An associate's or bachelor’s degree and additional specialized experience in safety and security or the behavioral sciences is preferred. Applicants must be at least 21 years old at the time of appointment. Successful completion of the required School Security Officer certification training approved by the Virginia Center for School Safety within sixty (60) days of hire and renewal certification annually. Must be current or willing to complete and maintain CPR/AED and first aid certification within 60 days of employment. |
Physical Conditions and Nature of Work Contacts: Duties performed typically in school settings include gymnasium, cafeteria, auditorium, and recreational areas. Frequent walking, standing, light lifting, up to 40 pounds, and other limited physical activities are required. Occasional attendance of building-level meetings, division-wide meetings, and training activities beyond normal assigned hours is necessary. Daily personal close contact with students to provide guidance and direction in movement to and from class during the school day and related activities. Regular contact with other staff members, parents, and the public may be required. Contacts with community and division-level staff may require considerable tact and diplomacy. |
