JOB DESCRIPTION: Dispatcher

POSITION SUMMARY:

  • The Dispatcher is responsible for providing support with the student transportation services area with the specific responsibilities of processing service requests pertaining to routine and emergency maintenance issues; maintaining department records in accordance with mandated requirements, and coordinating assigned projects. 

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 The Dispatcher:

 

  1. Compiles a variety of data (e.g., incident reports, inspections, student counts, mileage, driver routes, driver attendance, etc.) for the purpose of developing formal reports, conveying information, and complying with mandated requirements. *
  2. Informs school personnel and parents of practices (e.g., rules, regulations, laws, transportation related information, etc.) for the purpose of providing information for their follow-up action. *
  3. Participates in unit meetings, in-service trainings, workshops, etc. as required for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform job function. *
  4. Processes a variety of materials (e.g., service orders, route changes, requests for time off, etc.) for the purpose of updating and distributing information, authorizing action, and/ore complying with mandated requirements. *
  5. Receives inquiries from students, parents, and/or staff (e.g. stop locations, schedule, state regulated policies, etc.) for the purpose of providing the necessary information regarding transportation services. *
  6. Reviews bus video for the purpose of determining appropriate student behavior while riding the school bus. *
  7. Schedules substitute drivers for the purpose of ensuring routes are completed in the absence of a regular driver. *
  8. Schedules work assignments for regular drivers for the purpose of ensuring completion of transportation routes in a timely manner. *
  9. Serves as school bus driver for the purpose of ensuring routes are covered when a driver is absent. *
  10. Serves as back-up for office staff for the purpose of ensuring the transportation department receives calls and customers in a timely and efficient manner. *
  11. Serves as primary trainer (e.g. resolving conflict, harassment, evacuation and accident procedures, bus safety, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring drivers are efficient and effective in transporting students. *
  12. Follows the policies and procedures of the school and the District. *
  13. Demonstrates a sense of professional responsibility, such as demonstrating ethical behavior; providing accurate data and reports when needed; meeting deadlines; maintaining confidentiality; caring for the equipment and materials; and dressing appropriately and presenting a good role model. *
  14. Other duties as assigned.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Ability to read and write at a level necessary to successfully perform the required duties; ability to understand and carry out both oral and written instruction in an independent manner; ability to operate two-way radio; ability to operate standard office equipment; ability to exercise good judgment; ability to meet the physical requirements necessary to safely and effectively perform required duties; ability to establish and maintain effective work relationship with those contacted to the performance of required duties.
  • Knowledge of basic math skills; knowledge applicable operations and safety manuals; and pertinent policies and procedures .

-                Vision: (which may be corrected) must have close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

-                Hearing: (which may be corrected) to answer telephones and tolerate exposure to noisy conditions.

-                Speech: to be understood in face-to-face communications; to speak with a level of proficiency and volume to be understood over a telephone.

-                Body Mobility: use hands and fingers to feel, grasp, and manipulate small objects; manipulate fingers, twist and bend at the wrist and elbow; extend arms to reach outward and upward; use hands and arms to lift objects; turn, raise, and lower the head; occasionally stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.

-                Strength: to lift, push, pull and/or carry objects which weigh as much as 50 or more pounds on a frequent basis.

-                Environmental Requirements: encounter constant work interruptions; work cooperatively with others; work independently; work outdoors and indoors.

-                Mental Requirements: read, write, understand, interpret and apply information at a moderately complex level essential for successful job performance; math skills at a high school proficiency level; judgement and the ability to process information quickly; learn quickly and follow verbal procedures and standards; give verbal instruction; rank tasks in order of importance; copy, compare, compile, and coordinate information and records.

-                Additional Work Conditions and Physical Abilities: Requires travel to multiple sites.

ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:                    High school diploma, GED or equivalent, or combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired. Pre-employment drug test is required.

 

Preferred:                   Class “B” Commercial Driver’s License (or above) w/ Bus & Passenger Endorsement. CPR/FA/AED Certificate

EVALUATION

-       Evaluation of this position shall be by the Transportation Manager.
