Job Description

About Alation

Alation's Data Intelligence Platform is trusted by more than 600 customers — including 40% of the Fortune 100 — for self-service analytics, cloud transformation, data governance, and AI-ready data. Backed by over $340M in funding and valued at more than $1.7 billion, we're on a mission to build a world where data culture thrives and every decision is powered by trusted information.

We've been named one of Inc. Magazine's Best Workplaces five times. At Alation, we move fast, raise the bar relentlessly, and win as a team. If that sounds like your kind of place, keep reading.

About The Role

AI is reshaping how people find, understand, and use data, and we're building the products that define what that looks like in practice.

We're looking for a Product Manager who is genuinely AI-native: someone who thinks from an AI-first perspective, uses AI tools in their own workflow, and has the depth to know when AI is the right solution and when it isn't. This role owns meaningful surface area across the product portfolio.

The best PMs before AI were great at discovery, clear writing, strong customer relationships, and sharp execution. Those traits still matter here. What's different is the problem space: you'll be navigating probabilistic systems, agentic workflows, and user experiences where trust has to be earned, not assumed.

You'll build from zero to one and from one to many. You won't be handed a perfectly defined roadmap — you'll help create it.

This role is hybrid (Tues & Thurs.) in our Redwood City, CA office.

What You’ll Do

  • Own a problem space from discovery to delivery, driving real customer and business outcomes
  • Turn ambiguous problems into clear product direction, scoped bets, and shipped solutions
  • Define how humans interact with AI agents — including how to set expectations, handle failures gracefully, and build trust over time
  • Navigate the unique tradeoffs of AI systems: probabilistic outputs, latency, cost, and when AI is actually the right tool versus a simpler one
  • Work closely with engineering and applied science to define requirements, evaluate behavior, and move quickly
  • Talk to customers regularly to understand pain points, validate direction, and pressure-test ideas
  • Use AI in your own workflow — the best AI-native PMs eat their own cooking
  • Balance short-term execution with longer-term product thinking
  • Define success metrics and use data (qualitative and quantitative) to guide decisions
  • Improve how we build products — not just what we build — by raising the bar on clarity and execution

Experience & Skills

  • Minimum three (3) years in product management, engineering, consulting, startups, or similar problem-solving roles — we care more about what you've shipped than your years on the job
  • Demonstrated ability to ship real products or systems (at work or outside of it)
  • Hands-on familiarity with AI-powered products: you understand how LLMs behave, what evaluation means, and how AI products fail in ways that only reveal themselves in production
  • Strong analytical thinking and comfort working through complex, technical domains
  • Ability to write clearly — requirements, specs, narratives, and decision documents
  • Especially compelling: experience building agentic or LLM-based systems, or a background in enterprise data platforms, data governance, or developer-facing products

Note: We are unable to sponsor work visas at this time.
