Role Description This is a full-time, on-site Charter Boat Captain role based in Soldotna, AK. The Charter Boat Captain is responsible for safely operating charter vessels, managing navigation, monitoring weather and sea conditions, and ensuring compliance with all maritime regulations. Day-to-day tasks include preparing the boat for departures, conducting safety briefings, overseeing guest boarding and disembarkation, and maintaining a clean, well-organized vessel. The Captain will provide a welcoming and informative guest experience by sharing knowledge about local waters, wildlife, and fishing or sightseeing opportunities, while prioritizing safety at all times. The role also involves basic vessel maintenance checks, coordination with shore-based staff, accurate record-keeping (logs, fuel, and trip details), and mentoring crew members or deckhands as needed.
Qualifications
- Strong boating and vessel handling skills, including prior experience operating boats in coastal or river environments.
- Proficient navigation skills, including the use of charts, GPS, and other marine navigation tools.
- Proven customer service skills, with the ability to create a positive, inclusive, and professional guest experience.
- Ability to train and guide crew or deckhands in safety procedures, guest interaction, and basic vessel operations.
- Valid captain’s license (e.g., USCG license) appropriate for vessel size and passenger capacity, with a clean safety record.
- Current certifications in CPR/First Aid and any required maritime safety or emergency response training.
- Physical ability to perform duties on a boat, including standing for extended periods and handling lines and equipment in varying weather conditions.
- Familiarity with local Alaskan waters, wildlife, and weather patterns is highly beneficial.
