Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Volunteer Coordinator plays a vital role on the Alaska Zoo’s operations team. Volunteers are at the heart of our zoo community, contributing their time, energy and passion to help us fulfil our mission of wildlife conservation, education and community enrichment. The Volunteer Coordinator plays a critical role in ensuring that our volunteer program runs smoothly and effectively, directly supporting operations, special events, and guest experiences.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
- Recruit, interview and onboard new volunteers.
- Develop and deliver volunteer orientation and training programs.
- Assist with event logistics and volunteer training and supervision during events.
- Collaborate with Zoo staff and community partners to strengthen volunteer engagement.
- Create and manage volunteer schedules.
- Maintain accurate volunteer records and hours.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for volunteer inquiries and support.
- Coordinate volunteer appreciation events and recognition efforts.
- Collaborate with zoo staff to identify volunteer needs and opportunities.
- Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of the volunteer program.
- Represent the Alaska Zoo at partner events.
- Ensure volunteers understand and follow Zoo policies, procedures, and safety guidelines.
- Other duties, as assigned.
Education or Skills:
- Previous experience managing volunteers or working in a nonprofit setting preferred.
- Minimum of two (2) years’ experience in volunteer coordination, program management, community engagement, human resources or similar field.
- Applicants must have the ability to interact with a wide age range of people.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Prior data entry or volunteer management software experience preferred.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and knowledge of communication principles and practices.
- An understanding of and belief in the mission of the Alaska Zoo.
- Proficient in MS Office.
- Ability to work independently and manage time efficiently.
- GED or High School Diploma required.
Position Requirements:
- Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards.
- Ability to work on a flexible schedule, including weekends, evenings, holidays and in emergencies.
- Ability to lift and carry fifty (50) pounds, occasionally.
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and in a physically demanding environment.
- Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance.
