Qualifications:

To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:

  2. Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (Includes Blueprint Reading)
  3. Ability to Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment
  4. Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, and Repair, etc.
  5. Knowledge of Materials
  6. Measurement and Layout
  7. Technical Practices (Theoretical, Precise, Artistic)

Responsibilities:

The parks and duty stations hiring for these positions are below, as is each park's anticipated seasonal period. The typical seasonal period may vary during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding.
  • Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park (Skagway): April - October
  • Sitka National Historical Park (Sitka): April - September
Positions may not be filled at every duty station.

The duties of this position include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Preservation, rehabilitation, construction, repair of, and installation to items such as framework, floor joist, rafters, roof sheathing, sub-flooring, decking, framing, doors, windows, etc., using a variety of historic and non-historic materials such as, wood timbers, beams, plywood, particle board, sheet rock, paneling tile, etc.
  • Measure, cut, construct, install, repair, and modify wood, composite, and wood substitute items.
  • Apply standard measurements, specifications, and instructions when constructing, installing, or repairing items such as frame structures, decking, partitions, shelving, doors, forms, siding, and scaffolds.
Physical Demands: Duties require the incumbent to sit, stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, crawl, work in uncomfortable positions, and possibly walk over rough, uneven terrain. The incumbent may be required to wear protective clothing, gloves, face shields, and/or a respirator that may be uncomfortable; and the incumbent is likely to work from ladders, scaffolds, rooftops, and/or elevated platforms. The incumbent is expected to be able to lift up to 50 pounds unassisted and may be expected to lift and/or carry items exceeding 50 pounds in weight.

Working Conditions: Work is typically performed in both indoor workshops and outdoor work sites. Work outside may be subject to extreme weather conditions, with wind, rain, snow, and ice, in temperatures ranging from below 0 to over 100 degrees. Depending on the geography of the park unit assigned, work may take place at elevations ranging from sea level up to 10,000 feet. The incumbent is exposed to sawdust, noise, fumes, vibration, cuts, and abrasions from the use of tools and equipment, and may occasionally be exposed to hazardous materials that can cause skin, eye, and respiratory irritation and burns, as well as microbiological organisms and potentially hazardous wildlife. The incumbent is expected to wear personnel protective equipment as required and comply with all safety and occupational health requirements.
